Georgia held its first preseason scrimmage Wednesday at Sanford Sadium, with both young and old providing impressive showings.

Freshman Todd Gurley led all running backs with 58 yards and a touchdown on six carries, while senior Marlon Brown led the receivers with six catches for 103 yards and two scores. Statistics were assembled by the coaching staff, and the scrimmage was closed to the media.

"Marlon had the most opportunities today, and he took advantage of it," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said. "He has been hot the whole camp. He has been outstanding. I hope he can stay healthy. We were saying this a year ago, but I hope he stays healthy."

Brown, a 6-foot-5, 216-pounder from Memphis, had a 121-yard game at Vanderbilt last season but also missed two games due to injury.

"I had a pretty good day," Brown said. "I would say overall the offense had a pretty good day. Everybody was flying around making plays. It was good to see."

Starting quarterback Aaron Murray completed 12 of 17 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown, while Hutson Mason went 9-of-13 for 86 yards and two scores. Redshirt freshman Christian LeMay was 3-of-6 for 44 yards with an interception, while true freshman Faton Bauta was 0-for-3.

The starting offense faced the No. 2 defense, while the No. 2 offense faced the starting defense.

"The No. 1 offense scored three touchdowns on their first three drives," Richt said, "and the No. 1 defense didn't give up but only one first down on the first three drives. Both No. 1 units were dominant, which I like this time of year."

Starting tailback Ken Malcome had 32 yards on five carries, while freshman Keith Marshall netted 11 on seven. Richt said Gurley ran the ball well but had room other guys didn't.

As for the other receivers, Tavarres King had 66 yards on four catches, Rantavious Wooten had 45 and a touchdown on two catches, and Justin Scott-Wesley had 43 on three.

Defensive end Cornelius Washington had six tackles and three sacks to highlight that side of the ball, while inside linebacker Alec Ogletree had four tackles and a sack and cornerback Sanders Commings had the interception. Redshirt freshman cornerback and former Ridgeland High standout Devin Bowman had four tackles.

"We did what we were supposed to do in stopping the run, and we're becoming the defense everybody knows we can be," nose tackle John Jenkins said. "We've still got a lot to work on. We're striving for perfection."

Odds and ends

Richt said there were no significant injuries during the scrimmage. ... Sophomore Watts Dantzler and freshman John Theus split time at first-team right tackle, with Theus in on the opening drive. ... Sophomore walk-on Adam Erickson is the holder and the backup punter behind freshman Collin Barber.
