The trouble with Harry

Harry Reid may be majority leader of the U.S. Senate, but that's just his day job. His real calling, his true vocation, the arena in which he seems most his lowdown self, is that of ax man. And he's got a real talent for it. By now there are few tricks of that dirty trade he hasn't mastered. Senator Reid seems to enjoy the seamy side of politics so much it's hard to envision him being anything but the crass pol he is, long has been, and probably always will be.

Yes, the possibility of redemption is eternal, but odds are odds. And who better to live by the odds than a U.S. senator from Nevada, epicenter of the country's gambling industry? And the odds are long against Harry Reid's suddenly turning into a knight in shining armor; his whole record demonstrates his preference for the cheap shot, the low rumor, and transparent dodge. And why not? In his case, it's paid such political dividends — from his tenure in the Senate to national prominence.

The man is a case study in how to rise in politics by sinking ever lower. He may lack Richard Nixon's all-time record for general shadiness, but the senior senator from Nevada will do for this era, or at least until an even dirtier politician becomes a mainstay of the news.

The way Harry Reid has played this game indicates he's going to be a lifetime recidivist where the art of the smear is concerned. Maybe he just can't help himself, he enjoys the sport so much. We hear tell there are folks who love mud-rasslin', too.

Harry's latest class act is to say he's been told that that Mitt Romney, the GOP's presidential nominee-to-be, didn't pay any income taxes for 10 years.

Who told the senator so? That the senator refuses to say. Where's his proof? He doesn't need any, this being an American presidential election. When pressed by Mr. Romney ("Put up or shut up"), Senator Reid challenges Mitt Romney to disprove his allegation. He only makes the accusations; it's up to the accused to disprove them.

The spirit of Joe McCarthy yet lives — and once again prowls the halls of the U.S. Senate. Thanks to Harry Reid and others, politics has become more like character assassination. And now it's Mitt Romney's character that's in the bull's-eye. It comes with the territory known as an American presidential election. There's no telling what you'll hear about Barack Obama, either, that Kenyan Muslim.

Still, you have to admire the twist Harry Reid has given his latest smear job.

He says the rumor about Mr. Romney and his taxes came not from just a "credible" source, but an "extremely credible source." Also an extremely anonymous one, but no matter. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain — if there is one.

It's all part of a not so-grand American tradition that goes back to the presidential election of 1800, when both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams attracted the support of smear artists eager to tar the other. Now no presidential election would be complete without a flurry of ill-founded accusations.

When cornered, the accuser can just repeat the charge, or even elaborate on it. By now Senator Reid may have claimed he has other sources for his allegation, too. It will surprise no one to learn that they, too, are anonymous. It's good to see American traditions continued. But not this one.

Naturally, the senator has consistently declined to release his own income tax returns over the years. That's only for lesser creatures, like Republican presidential candidates.

This is a game anyone can play. For instance, we've been told — and by an extremely credible source, too — that Senator Reid closely coordinated this smear with Barack Obama and the rest of the bunch now occupying the White House. If the senator denies it, it would be easy enough to resolve the matter: Just have him release his records of every communication, contact or even near-contact with all the president's men — and women, too. Just as he's said that all Mitt Romney has to do to clear up this matter of his income taxes is release the last five, ten, or maybe 20 years of his tax records. (What, not his father's, too?) Let the senator from the casino state also prove that he's stopped beating his wife.

There. See how easy this is? All it takes is a little imagination and unlimited nerve.

What we do know is that in the tax returns that Romney did release, he paid a lower percentage tax, 14%, than almost any middle American. From that we can logically assume that the years' tax returns that he won't release contain even more damaging figures.

Privilege in Amerca is reserved for the very few and we all know it. Is extreme privilege what we want to try to lead us out of the swamp?

And Harry Reid? He is about as close as we get to an honest gentleman in Washington these days. Our new young editor is again full of selective facts meant to misinform.

Harry Reid is one of the bravest men I know--put his lifelong career and honor on the line for truth to be heard across this country. He is not one to shoot from the lip and wouldn't have said that about Mitt had he not been 100% certain in his statement. Mitt could dispute it in a minute and make Reid look like an idiot if it weren't true. He wouldn't have to even show his returns--just get a legitimate accounting audit firm to release the bottom line.

Harry Reid is a man without morals or shame, a man who will lie so blatantly that he doesn’t even care if people know he’s lying, just so long as he thinks his lies are having some effect. A couple weeks back, Dingy Harry started attacking Mitt Romney. At first this seemed strange since no one really cares what the bastard says. But it soon became clear he had been chosen by Obama to lead the smearing of Romney. Reid was likely chosen because he’s a Mormon and thus cannot be accused of being anti-Mormon.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid again deflected questions Monday about releasing his tax returns, even as he continued to pound the demand for Mitt Romney to make more of his own public.

Instead, Reid pointed to the financial disclosure forms he files as a member of Congress, which provide different information.

“I’m a member of Congress now, I don’t make too much money,” said Reid, whose net worth was estimated at $10 million in 2010. “But it’s all listed every year.”

Apparently, it’s easy to become worth $10 million dollars on a salary of $193,000 a year. (Which, in fact, Reid has only recently received as Majority Leader.)

By the way, notice that Reid thinks $193,000 a year is not" too much money." But he believes that an individual making $200,000 a year is too much money.

Surely you are not that stupid are you? Harry Reid is a lying POS. Why does he not name his source or give some proof? Did you know that Harry Reid said that paying income taxes was voluntary? If this POS Harry Reid is correct then if anyone does not pay taxes then they are not breaking the law. I still want to see Hussein Obama's college grades.

joneses....again as part of the right-wingers strategy, you're trying to deflect the issue and put it on someone else. Reid said Mitt paid no taxes for ten years, Mitt is running for president therefore should we as voters be concerned about Reid or Mitt? Surely you're not so stupid as to think anyone in Mitt's position wouldn't make Reid look like a fool, that is if he could.

We should be concerned about both of them and the lies Hussein Obama has told as well. We should be concerned about Hussein Obama's college grades and his illegal Fast and Furious Gun Running scheme. We should be concerned about Hussein's Obama's relationship with the terrorist Bill Ayers. You are part of a dishonest slanderous hate filled left wing strategy to manipulate your ignorant followers. I am not part of any strategy stupid but I know a liar when I see one. And you are a liar. If someone accused you of being a pedophile with no proof does than mean it is true? No, it does not stupid. You are taking the word of a fool, Harry Reid, with no proof. So you are the one deflecting the issue. Harry Reid is a lying POS and you are really showing how stupid and gullible you are by believing every word he says. It is amazing how stupid people like you are, really amazing. Below is more proof of Harry Reid's dishonesty. By the way, I think Hussein Obama is a traitor. That makes it true according to your logic. That means you are supporting a traitor to occupy the White House.

Sen Majority Leader Harry Reid seems to be awash with incredible land deals in the deserts around Las Vegas.

In 2002, Reid (D-Nev.) paid $10,000 to a pension fund controlled by Clair Haycock, a Las Vegas lubricants distributor and his friend for 50 years. The payment gave the senator full control of a 160-acre parcel in Bullhead City that Reid and the pension fund had jointly owned. Reid’s price for the equivalent of 60 acres of undeveloped desert was less than one-tenth of the value the assessor placed on it at the time.

Six months after the deal closed, Reid introduced legislation to address the plight of lubricants dealers who had their supplies disrupted by the decisions of big oil companies. It was an issue the Haycock family had brought to Reid’s attention in 1994, according to a source familiar with the events.

If Reid were to sell the property for any of the various estimates of its value, his gain on the $10,000 investment could range from $50,000 to $290,000.

It is a potential violation of congressional ethics standards for a member to accept anything of value — including a real estate discount — from a person with interests before Congress.

One more thing. I would like for Hussein Obama to disclose all the money he has made over the last ten years, where it came from and how much taxes he paid so we can see if he has collected more from the government teat than he has paid in. I would say he probably has taken more from the taxpayer than he has paid. But then again why would he or any liberal looting the taxpayer surprise any of us?

joneses.....little Mittens got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Now little Mittens right-wing friends like little joneses are trying to smooth it over by telling everyone that he heard the neighbor kids little Obama and Harry once snitched a cookie. There, now little Mittens won't have to cry since they've covered over the issue. Yeah, right.

I agree but earlier you said "He (Harry Reid) is not one to shoot from the lip and wouldn't have said that about Mitt had he not been 100% certain in his statement." Now you say all politicians are "in general liars" meaning Harry Reid is a liar as well as all politicians. Because Harry Reid is a politician and in general all politicians are liars than Harry Reid is a liar. He is a proven liar because he is a politician and he has no proof of his accusation. If Harry has proof than lets see it. If he does not then the only other reasoning he would make a statement like that would be to lie to for the sole purpose of smearing Presidential Candidate Romney. Pretty simple.

I would like to see how much money Hussein Obama has taken from the government in income versus how much taxes he has paid to the government. Would you agree that Obama needs to disclose this information for the last 10 years?

I read a lot of huffing and puffing...attacking the messenger, but no acceptance of the basic fact that Romney pays such a small percentage of tax that everyone else must pay a higher percentage to cover his shortfall.

Romney is a roll-model for the 1%. With his roots, his background, his performance to date...what does he have to offer the other 99%?

"Would you agree that Obama needs to disclose this information for the last 10 years?"

Obama has disclosed the last 12 years of tax returns.

All the hate is coming from you and your side. You are ignorant to facts. No one should ever take you seriously. All Harry Reid did was make an accusation. There was no slander involved. However, you have made several libelous remarks against Reid.

You have the reasoning skills of a 1st grader. You cannot even type a cogent argument or even a coherent sentence. No one should take you seriously.

joneses....again I don't hate conservatives, I just think most of their thinking is wrong. If it weren't for conservatives, we liberals wouldn't have anyone to debate on this site. As for Harry Reid, all Romney has to do is release a single tax return to make Reid both a liar and a slanderer. I really don't think Reid is dumb enough to purposely set himself for such a possible embarrassment and liability.

For left-wing politics, lying goes back to the Russian Bolsheviks or earlier. The masses were lied to because the ruling elite (or the ruling elite to be) felt that the ends (Marxism) justified any means, and the masses were too stupid and ignorant to know what was good for them. But the ruling elite knew exactly what was good for them. Leftists have a rather low opinion of the masses, the average citizen.

Liberalism is like a religion, and it has zealots as fanatical as any other religion. But unlike most religions, liberalism has no moral code. The closest thing to a moral code in liberalism is “don’t get caught”. Ethics are situational, and totally up for interpretation. The truth is subjective, and the truth is merely what you want it to be. To the fanatic the leftist cause is so noble, so sacred that any lying or cheating for the leftist cause is justified.

When a liberal lies to the American public, he is in effect saying,

“You are too stupid to know what is good for you. I know what is good for you. I will say anything I need to say to convince you my way is the right way.”

If liberals were honest about their vision for this country few people would ever vote for them. Liberals must lie to us in order to impose the tyranny of liberalism upon us.

Are you kidding me?? You are seriously comparing Reid's accusation to Joe McCarthy's witch hunt for communists? Most likely Harry Reid really does have a credible source to back up his accusation, but even if he just pulled it out of thin air, all that Romney has to do to disprove it is to show us his tax records for the past 10 years. Period. If he indeed paid his taxes in full and it's all verifiable, that would be the end of discussion. Reid would be proven to be a liar and a slanderer and Romney would come out smelling like a rose, probably picking up several percentage points in the polls. If Romney is clean and above board, as he claims, he is being incredibly stupid not to reveal his tax records. The fact that he is so reluctant to do so only makes him look guilty as charged.

McCarthy's accusations, on the other hand, did some serious long-term damage to a lot of Americans who had no verifiable proof - only their word - to convince people of their absence of any ties to communist groups. Even after they swore under oath that they were not communists or had communist leanings, many of them were placed on a black list, doing irreparable harm to their reputations and careers.

Harry Reid = Joe McCarthy? Not even close!

Funny, never said anything about Michelle Bachmann, Allen West, or Donald Trump, did you?

See, if you actually bothered to show some integrity, you might be believed.

Can't do that though.
