Whitfield County authorities talked a man who locked himself in his room with a gun into surrendering without incident earlier today.
When officials went to Robbie Drive around 8:30 a.m. to pick up Derrick Chastain, a parolee who was accused of violating parole, he refused to surrender, said Sheriff Scott Chitwood in a news release.
Multiple state agencies surrounded the house, while a sheriff’s office negotiator was able to get Chastain on the phone, where they talked off and on for several hours, Chitwood said.
At 12:15, the negotiator was able to convince Chastain to surrender and leave the weapon inside the house, Chitwood. Chastain is being held in jail without bond on the parole violation charge. Additional charges are pending.
