Georgia man drowns in DeKalb County, Alabama

A Georgia man drowned this week at Little River Canyon National Preserve in DeKalb County, authorities said.

The Gadsden Times reported that 64-year-old William Ragland was swimming in a popular area named High Rock that features a 10- to 15-foot cliff.

Park Ranger John Newman said rangers responded to a call about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Newman said a woman was in the water and tried to find Ragland, who had jumped in and didn't resurface.

The park's fire technician jumped in and brought the woman to shore.

Newman said the Fischer Rescue Squad's dive team found Ragland's body in 12 feet of water after a brief search.
