Summers backs Sisk as sheriff

RINGGOLD, Ga. - Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers said Thursday he will endorse Maj. Gary Sisk as the next sheriff.

Summers, who is retiring, said he wants to leave the office in the hands of someone he trusts and who is passionate about keeping the community safe.

Sisk is facing former Lookout Mountain Drug Task Force Cmdr. Larry Black in a runoff election Aug. 21.

Black took the most votes in the primary but didn't get 50 percent, and Sisk came in second.

"Gary Sisk is someone whom I have grown to trust and respect over the years for many reasons including his professional and competent leadership in law enforcement, his dedication to our community and his strong character," Summers said.

Black said he expected Summers to endorse his chief deputy, but that voters already have shown their support for him.
