University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Steven Fox has advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur championship at Cherry Hills Golf Club outside Denver.
Fox defeated Chris Williams 4 and 2 to advance to a semifinal against Brandon Hagy, a junior at the University of California from Westlake Village, Calif.
Fox, who survived a 17-man playoff for 14 spots in the match-play format and earned the 63rd seed, controlled his Friday match.
Williams, the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, was 2 down through four holes. Fox stretched his lead to 4 up through nine holes. Fox closed out Williams with a birdie on the par 4 16th hole.
