Woman charged with forgery
RAINSVILLE, Ala. — A 25-year-old Rainsville woman has been charged with passing several forged checks in north Alabama, authorities say.
Amber Kira Nicho Thompson is charged with two counts of second-degree forgery, seven counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument and seven counts of third-degree theft by deception, said DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris in a news release.
The forgery charges involve two stores in DeKalb County while the other charges are from Jackson County, he said.
Celtic games coming to town
RINGGOLD, Ga. — The Celts are coming to Ringgold on Labor Day weekend as part of the Appalachian Celtic Festival and Highland Games.
The games will be held on Sept. 1-2 at 288 Emberson Drive and will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 1 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 2. The festival will include traditional Celtic and Appalachian music, arts, crafts, as well as the Scottish Highland Athletic Games. Admission is $5 for adults age 13 and up and $3 for children age 6 to 12. Children under age 6 are free.
Convict seeks high court ruling
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Attorneys for one of the convicts in the slaying of a young Knoxville couple are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in their client's appeal.
According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, lawyers for George Thomas want the high court to rule on whether a pill-addicted judge can preside over a constitutionally sound trial.
Thomas is one four defendants convicted in the January 2007 kidnapping and torture killing of 21-year-old Channon Christian and 23-year-old Christopher Newsom.
Fake war hero pleads guilty
A man who falsely claimed to be a war hero has pleaded guilty of fraud and theft in obtaining nearly a half-million dollars in government benefits.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that Charles Kaczmarczyk pleaded guilty in federal court on Friday. Federal prosecutors said he faked documents for medals, including the Purple Heart and the Silver Star, and filed for veteran's and Social Security benefits, collecting $457,000.
