Workers today mounted the first panel on what will be the largest solar park in Tennessee at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant site.
Projected to cost about $30 million, the 33,600 solar panels will be built by Phoenix Solar on the 65-acre site just north of the German automaker’s assembly plant at Enterprise South industrial park.
Thilo Brockhaus, VW’s manager of construction, said the solar array is expected to produce power late this year.
The solar park is expected to produce 12.5 percent of all the energy needed for the massive factory, according to VW.
The system is to generate 13.1 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, officials said.
