USCS Outlaw cars coming to Boyd's Speedway and other sports news

Boyd's Speedway is scheduled to host its fifth annual "Sprint Car Mania" this Friday night with the United Sprint Car Series Outlaw Thunder Tour making an appearance at the 3/8-mile track. USCS Mid South, Southern Thunder regional and national championship points will be awarded for the 1,300-pound, 700-horsepower, alcohol-burning, open-wheel winged Outlaw cars that exceed 120 mph. Among the drivers expected are 10-time and defending USCS national champion Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tenn.; 2012 points leader Tim Crawley of Benton, Ark., who has 11 USCS wins this year; 19-year-old female standout Morgan Turpen of Bartlett, the 2010 USCA national rookie of the year; and Aubrey Black of Lookout Mountain. Black plans to drive also in the separate Winged Mini Sprint Series race. The evening also will include the track's usual A- and B-Hobby and Front Wheel Drive classes. Gates will open at 5 p.m., and the racing will start at 7.

Running

• Teenager Mark Garagusa Jr. won the inaugural Art on the Greenway 5k run last Saturday in Cleveland, and Terrie Tubbs was the first female and second overall. Garagusa, 17, finished in 21 minutes, 6.46 seconds; Tubbs' time was 21:39.30. Bruce Bayless, 54, was third in 22:38.50, and two 45-year-olds, Jeff England and Kevin Gardner, completed the top five. Pam Nile was the second woman and 10th overall, with 12-year-old girls Neely Thomas and Daphne Thomas 11th and 12th.

BASEBALL

• The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that former Ringgold baseball player Kyle Heckathorn is one of eight Milwaukee Brewers minor league prospects that has been selected to take part in the Arizona Fall League. The right-handed Heckathorn has a 5-11 pitching record and 4.81 ERA in 34 appearances (17 starts) with the Class AA Southern League's Huntsville Stars with 87 strikeouts in 118 innings pitched. The six-team league, which is owned and operated by Major League Baseball, plays six days per week at six Cactus League Stadiums in the Phoenix area. Opening day is Oct. 9. Each major league team is required to provide seven minor league players to the league, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
