McClendon paces Wesleyan victory

Zamarius McClendon had 32 points and 17 rebounds to pace the Tennessee Wesleyan men's basketball team to a 90-77 victory over visiting Union College in a matchup of AAC Bulldogs on Saturday.

Union beat the TWC women 67-42 as Lindsey Waters had 14 points and three blocks and Haley Perkins had 11 rebounds and five steals while only Cody Houck with 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks was effective for the hosts.

McClendon hit 12 of 13 free throws in the men's game, when Matt Harper added 22 points and seven rebounds and Shannon Smith had 17 points and eight assists for TWC. Tarik Smith led Union with 24 points and seven rebounds.

In another AAC game, Bryan's women rose to 6-2 (1-1) with a 62-51 win at Columbia (S.C.) College.

* At Cleveland, Lee University swept Spring Hill in an SSAC doubleheader. The Lady Flames (7-1, 2-1) shot 47.6 percent to the visitors' 26.5 percent in winning 81-49 as Myriah Iles and Mary Jackson scored 17 and 15 points off the bench. Hollie German scored 11 after totaling 31 the night before, and Jenna Adams followed a 14-rebound, 14-point night with 12 rebounds and 10 points Saturday.

The Flames then rose to 9-0, 4-0 in the SSAC, with Duran Blue going 9-for-10 from the field and setting a school record with 7-of-7 3-point accuracy in his 25 points. Will Barnes and Corey Billingsley added 20 and 16 points in the 90-52 rout, Barnes with nine rebounds, and Chase Dunn and Blue had six and five assists. Lee made 19 of 31 3s (.613) as a team.

* On Lookout Mountain, Covenant swept visiting Oglethorpe, the Lady Scots (4-1) winning 76-55 behind Haley Soles' 17 points and four assists, Jessie Blankenship's 15 points, Ruth Gibson's 10 points and Kiaira Cooper's 10 rebounds. Sarah Giles had 24 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks for the Petrels (2-4).

Covenant's men overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to give Oglethorpe its first loss, 68-59, as Jon DeVries scored 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 10-of-10 on free throws. Colton McGriff added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Scots (2-3).

* At Sewanee, visiting Centre pulled out two close wins in SAA openers, 42-41 in the women's game and 50-48 in the men's. Paige Lowe scored 15 points and Kayla Sewell had 12 points and four blocks for the Sewanee women, and Valentino Bryant with 12 points and Keshonn Carter with 10 points and seven rebounds paced the Sewanee guys.

* At Chattanooga State, visiting Volunteer State swept two TCCAA games. The host Lady Tigers (6-2, 4-2) took undefeated Vol State to overtime before losing 74-66 despite 23 and 21 points by Khamiyah Crawford and Stevonna Scott. Sarah Bliss led the Lady Pioneers (10-0, 5-0) with 17, including five in the extra period.

Nick Ross scored 32 points as the Tigers fell 81-66, and Demetrius Kitchens scored 13 after tallying 21 with Ross's 23 in Friday's 109-99 loss to Motlow.

* At Cleveland State, the Lady Cougars beat Motlow's Lady Bucks 58-39 before the 28th-ranked Bucks tripped the 13th-ranked Cougars, 66-58. Jara Gasper had 12 points and Robyn Anthony added nine for the winning women (6-5, 3-3), while Lekera Taylor scored 11 for Motlow (3-5, 2-3).

Trey Suttles scored 19 points and Travis Jones and Ralph Eason added 13 apiece for the Cougars (9-2, 5-1) after that trio scored 22, 22 and 15 in Friday's overtime win over Vol State. Perrin Buford scored 12 and D.J. Jones and Michael Tomlin added 11 and 10 for the Bucks (7-1, 5-0).

* At Huntsville, Ala., Mariah Price had 24 points and nine rebounds and Odessa Person collected 21 rebounds with 12 points as Georgia Northwestern's freshman-laden two-year team edged four-year Oakwood University 80-75. Nine of Person's rebounds were on the offensive backboards. Kiarra Parks had 18 points and three steals for the Lady Bobcats (4-4).

Candie Bone and Christy Harris led Oakwood with 22 and 21 points.
