Former Alabama minister convicted with sexual abuse

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A former youth minister who was already convicted of sexual abuse in Elmore County has been convicted of similar crimes in Cullman County.

State Attorney General Luther Strange on Wednesday announced that John A. Astorga of Titus was found guilty of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 in Cullman County. He once worked as a youth minister in Wetumpka.

Authorities say 38-year-old Astorga was convicted of sexual abuse in Elmore County in April. He was sentenced to three years in jail in the Elmore County case and was free on bond while appealing.

Astorga was taken into custody by the Cullman County Sheriff's Office and has yet to be sentenced. He faces one to 10 years in prison and must register as a sex offender.
