Two pick up papers for East Ridge court clerk position

Two potential candidates picked up papers to run to be East Ridge's first elected court clerk.

Brock Bennington, 43, and Greg Ezell, 53, are both considering running for the spot, according to the Hamilton County Election Commission.

Bennington said he may run in the special March 5 election because several people suggested he wouldd be good at the job.

"I think I've got the managerial skills," he said. "I just like to serve -- I'd like to do something to serve the people again."

Bennington has a military background and served as a deputy sheriff and state trooper before he retired.

Ezell, who has worked in private industry for 30 years, said that if he's elected, he wants to give back to the East Ridge community.

"Using my management experience I've gained over a lifetime, I just want to be able to bring a sense of professionalism to the East Ridge Court Clerk's office," he said.

The East Ridge City Council voted in October to change the clerk's position from one named by the municipal judge to an elected office. Councilmen set the clerk's salary at $54,472 a year.

Bennington, Ezell and any other potential candidates must qualify for the election by Dec. 20. Qualifying petitions and more information are available at the Hamilton County Election Commission office at 700 River Terminal Road, or by phone at 423-493-5100.
