Vehicle pileup leaves one dead in Dade County, Ga.

One man is confirmed dead after an early morning vehicle pileup in Dade County.

Muller Wheeler, 86, was traveling east in the westbound lane of Interstate 24 when his vehicle collided head-on with a tractor trailer, Georgia State Patrol Trooper 1st Class Jason Ballard said. Wheeler was killed. No one else was injured, Ballard said.

The accident happened a little after 4 a.m. and involved three vehicles directly — Wheeler’s vehicle, the tractor-trailer and another vehicle, Ballard said. Other vehicles were disabled after running over debris from the wreck, he said.

Officers are unsure of how and why Wheeler got into the wrong lane.

“There was a grass median, but there’s no indication he crossed it,” Ballard said.

The accident is under investigation.
