Law enforcement cuts coming in Alabama, and more region news

Law enforcement cuts coming

A state task force report will recommend ways to cut Alabama's law enforcement spending, most likely by combining some of the state's 22 law enforcement agencies.

The Anniston Star reported the Integrated State Law Enforcement Task Force isn't yet giving specifics of what would be cut under the proposal. The report is to be delivered to Gov. Robert Bentley this weekend.

Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith said the recommendations should bring Alabama in line with neighboring states.

Man charged in 2001 killing

Police arrest man in a 2001 killing.

Chief Brian Kelly said Daniel Lee Mason III, 40, of Atlanta, was taken into custody after an attack on a woman in Gainesville last week. Police say the attack bore striking similarities to the death of Crystal Star Barnette, 37, in April 2001.

A 39-year-old woman was attacked Wednesday night but survived. Kelly told The Times of Gainesville that the woman and Barnette were walking when they were attacked, and the crimes happened less than a block apart.

Mason is charged with murder and aggravated assault in the 2001 case.
