Joseph Czabaranek missed the course record by just over two minutes in winning the 2012 Lookout Mountain 50-mile trail run Saturday in 6 hours, 54 minutes, 36 seconds, but Ali Edwards of Birmingham shattered the women's record by nearly half an hour with an 8:22:19 finish, good for sixth overall. Czabaranek, a 27-year-old from Shalimar, Fla., won by more than an hour in the Rock/Creek Trail Series event. Ryan Thompson was second overall in 7:57:58, followed by Olaf Wasternack in 7:59:00, Michael Plummer in 8:09:50 and Christophe Block in 8:19:21. John Cassilly in eighth (8:24:02) was the top finisher older than 40; he's 46. The second female was Rhonda Felder, 28th in 8:58:58. Edwards' finish beat Sarah Woerner's previous women's best of 8:51:49 from 2010. Josh Wheeler retains the overall standard of 6:52:10 from 2009. Sam Dech won the Lookout Mountain 10k Saturday with a 38:58, and Misty Griffin at 49:00 edged Rachel Mason for female honors by 10 seconds.
• Chattanooga's Tim Ensign was the overall winner Saturday morning in the 28th Wauhatchie Trail Race, but that was nothing new. It was his eighth time to claim the title in the race that gives head starts based on age and gender. And for the third year in a row, Ensign, now 50, edged Sergio Bianchini for the win. Bianchini, 71, got a head start of 16 minutes over the zero group, men ages 25-29, and finished 36 minutes, 38 seconds after the first group took off. Ensign made it in 35:46 with a 5:30 head start, and Jan Gautier was third overall at 38:20 as a 47-year-old female starting 11:45 before fourth- and fifth-place finishers Patrick Hall and Daniel Goetz, who had the shortest times on the course at 38:30 and 38:43. Bradley Adams and Bob Adams won the family team competition with brothers Daniel and Joseph Goetz second, Ensign and his wife Barbara third and Bianchini and his 22-year-old son Marco fourth.
Basketball
• The Bryan College women's basketball team barely lost, 49-47, to visiting Bethel University on Saturday. Bethel, 11-2 and ranked 12th in NAIA Division I, got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Jasmine Taylor and 15 points from Jackliann Street. For NAIA Division II member Bryan (6-4), Morgan Burnette had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Jenna Ray scored 10 points and Kelsey Brooks made four steals.
• Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School scored 18 points with four 3-point baskets, sharing game scoring honors, as Carson-Newman beat Milligan 101-68 in men's basketball Saturday. Cody Henegar from Marion County added nine points for the Eagles (7-1).
General
• Ten current or former UTC athletes received degrees in Saturday's graduation ceremony, led by tennis player Peter Sauska with a master's of business administration and the John C. Stophel Distinguished Student Award. Runners Kathryn Stuart and Mary Cumbee were magna cum laude and cum laude graduates, tennis player Sam Parfitt also graduated cum laude, and softball player Jessica Traxler, soccer player Donna-Kay Henry and football players Nick Davison, Chris Harr, J.J. Jackson and Brock Oliver also graduated.
