Jayne Griffin speaks to children as they celebrate during a previous New Year's Eve 12-hours early celebration at Creative Discovery Museum .The Creative Discovery Museum on Chestnut Street will once again celebrate the new year with a series of activities aimed at children featuring traditional symbols of age and renewal.
Father Time and Baby New Year, representing 2012 and 2013 respectively, will be at the celebration, which runs Monday, Dec. 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The activities include a countdown to noon that will culminate in a confetti drop, and a 1 p.m. dance party led by Father Time with live music provided by the band Saxophobia. At 2 p.m., visitors will don hats and wield wands made earlier in the day for a grand parade and participate in an "extravaganza of popping bubble wrap fireworks."
The events, which are based on traditional adult activities, are designed to teach children about the passage of time in a child-friendly way, according to a museum news release.
"This is the best New Year's Eve party in town designed for kids," said Jayne Griffin, the museum's director of education, in the release.
As one of the area's only New Year's Eve events aimed at younger participants, attendance is generally high. As such, the museum encourages visitors to arrive no later than 11:35 a.m. to participate in the countdown noon. All activities are included in the $11.95 museum admission to the museum.
