Chattanoogans Brad Cobb and Stephen Lebovitz wrapped up a successful week in South America competing in the six-day TransAndes Challenge mountain bike race. Cobb finished in 16th place overall out of around 250 riders, and he was eighth in the open men's division with an overall time of 24 hours, 2 minutes, 37 seconds. Lebovitz finished fourth in the 45-plus men's division in 29:06:42 in the race that started in Panguipulli, Chile, and finished last Saturday in Pucon, Chile. The overall individual winner was Stefan Sahm of Germany, who completed the race in a total time of 20:35:31.
Golf
• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Stephan Jaeger from Baylor School is competing today through Sunday in the Jones Cup Invitational tournament at Sea Island, Ga. Fellow Baylor alumnus Luke List, now on the Nationwide Tour, won the tournament in 2007, and Kyle Stanley won two years later. LSU's John Peterson won the Jones Cup and the NCAA tournament last year. Jaeger, currently ranked No. 8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, played in the event at the Ocean Forest Golf Club last year and tied for 56th as teammate Steven Fox shared 22nd place.
Basketball
• CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Lee University defeated Southern Wesleyan in both games of their Southern States Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader Thursday. Kally Eldridge scored 14 points, Hollie German and Angela Spann added 11 and 10 and Mary Jackson grabbed nine rebounds as Lee's Lady Flames, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I, romped 82-21. The 17th-ranked Flames won 83-63 as Alex Wells scored 14 points, Tyrone Caldwell had 12 points and six assists and Chad Lee and Ryan Westbrooks also scored in double figures.
• ATHENS, Tenn. -- Teqa McNeal had 31 points, seven rebounds and five steals as the visiting Bluefield College women's basketball team edged first-place host Tennessee Wesleyan 71-67 in double overtime in an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Thursday. Heather Gibson had 25 points and 15 rebounds, Cody Houck scored 12 points and Michelle Davis had 10 rebounds with 10 points for TWC (17-7, 10-3). The first-place Wesleyan men won 100-61 over third-place Bluefield, however, with Quincy Scates and Desmond Crisp scoring 28 and 26 points, Matt Harper adding 13 and E'Jay Ward contributing five steals and five assists.
• DAYTON, Tenn. -- Bryan College divided two close AAC basketball home games Thursday against Virginia Intermont, the Lady Lions losing 72-69 but the Bryan men winning 75-73 with Lavonte Henderson's three field goals and a free throw in the final 1:45 capping a 9-1 closing run. Teonika Webb had 31 points and five steals as Intermont's Lady Cobras avoided an upset and moved into a tie with Tennessee Wesleyan for first place. Morgan Burnette had 20 points and seven rebounds and Mercedes Owens scored 15 points for Bryan. Rob Riley and Jerrod Allen each scored 16 points for the Lions, Dion Fair had 15 points and five assists and Henderson got to 13 points with his winning basket with two seconds left.
• Ishmael Sanders from Cleveland made three of seven 3-point shots and scored 15 points in Carson-Newman's 84-63 South Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday at Brevard.
Lacrosse
• New Tennessee Wesleyan women's lacrosse coach Jenna Handshoe is scheduled to lead her team in a scrimmage Saturday at Berry College. The season officially starts next Saturday at Birmingham-Southern, and the Lady Bulldogs' home opener is Feb. 18 against Shorter. Handshoe starred at Presbyterian College during the time that it made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I, and she was second-team all-conference as a senior, when she led the Blue Hose with 70 shots, 60 shots on goal, 36 goals and 49 points. She also led them in goals as a junior with 28 and made the league all-tournament team. Growing up in Greenville, S.C., Handshoe led J.L. Mann High School to the 2006 South Carolina state championship as tournament MVP and was the state's defensive player of the year. She worked as a volunteer coach for Presbyterian and was on staff at the Excel Lacrosse Camp for girls in her home state, and she is a Level 1 lacrosse official. "We are excited to have Coach Handshoe join our athletics staff," TWC athletic director Donny Mayfield said in a school release. "She comes to us after posting an excellent collegiate career, and we look forward to her sharing these experiences with our women's lacrosse team."
Softball
• Sophomore infielder Sara Kelley from Ooltewah High School went 3-for-4 with the winning single in the eighth inning as Carson-Newman opened its softball season with a 7-6 victory Thursday at St. Andrews University, and the Lady Eagles completed the sweep with a 10-2 win. Shortstop Shelby Robertson from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe drove in two runs and stole three bases in her first college game and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two steals and two runs in game two, when freshman second baseman Jessica Morgan from Ooltewah was 3-for-3 with a steal, a run and an RBI as the leadoff batter. Caitlyn Lance from Ridgeland was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI in the doubleheader, and catcjer Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah had an RBI in each game.
