The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team swept the six singles matches in defeating Lipscomb 6-1 on Saturday at the Racquet Club in Hixson. The visiting Bison pulled out the doubles point with two wins in the three matches, including 9-8 (7-5) over Roberto Vieira and Chris Smith, but Vieira won 6-2, 6-1 and Smith won 6-2, 7-5 at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, Manuel Barroetavena won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and teammates Ankit Chopra, Jackson Tresnan and Pavels Grigorjevs pulled out hard-fought victories. UTC (3-2) hosts another Nashville team, Belmont, at 5 p.m. Friday at the Racquet Club.

• CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Lee University completed a three-game season-opening baseball sweep of Talladega College on Saturday, but victory three wasn't nearly as easy as the two on Friday. The NAIA's third-ranked Flames needed a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 2-1. Blake Barber tripled with one out for the Flames' sixth hit, Roberto Reyes was intentionally walked and Mike Moore hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the win. Andy Hillis got the pitching win with one inning of perfect relief, after Jose Samayoa allowed two hits and no runs in six innings and Dustin Lawson gave up two hits and a run in two innings.
• EAST POINT, Ga. -- Tennessee Temple University's very young baseball team lost twice in its season debut Saturday at Point University, 4-1 and 3-2 in eight innings. The Crusaders, who started seven freshmen in each game, led 2-0 in the sixth inning of the second game as senior pitcher Josh Daniel from Cartersville, Ga., had a one-hitter going. But Point got one run in the sixth, a tying home run in the seventh and ultimatelysix hits in the victory. Daniel's freshman brother, Luke, had an RBI hit in each game. Freshmen Caden Shadrick and Brett Bartley from Marion County and Sequatchie County, respectively, each had two of Temple's eight hits in game two, when classmate Taylor Wilson from Cartersville had a sacrifice fly. Freshman Brandon Davis from Central High pitched a complete first game for Temple, allowing four hits and three earned runs in six innings. He started in left field in game two, and Shadrick, center fielder Nico McElrath, right fielder Luke Daniel and Wilson also started both games as freshmen. Bartley and Hunter Giles were other second-game freshman starters, and former Red Bank player Gunter Barton started game one in left with Walker Valley's Dustin Stowers the designated hitter. South Pittsburg's Giles and fellow freshmen Bryan Burnette from Red Bank and Cody Wilson from Grundy County are other key pitchers. Starting shortstop Jon Clayton is the only senior beside the elder Daniel, and third-base starter Chris Altman from Albertville, Ala., is a junior for coach Greg Bartley.
• DECATUR, Ga. -- Chattanooga State opened its baseball season Saturday by losing 6-2 and 6-5 at Georgia Perimeter, which won its conference regular season last year. Shortstop Jordan McDonald had two hits and he and second baseman had RBI singles in the first game for the Tigers, and Connor Gilbert had a three-double in a four-run third inning in game two, when Zach Lance had a double and an RBI single. Tripp White and Alex Ridge were the losing pitchers.

• SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- UTC golfer and Baylor School graduate Stephan Jaeger shot a 74 Saturday and is tied for 30th at 152 going into the final round of the Jones Cup Invitational tournament. Manav Shah of Bakersfield, Calif., has a three-stroke lead with his 142.

• JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Sophomore guard Ishmael Sanders from Cleveland High School led the Carson-Newman College men's basketball team in its 78-64 home loss Saturday against Wingate. Sanders had 17 points with three 3-point baskets and three assists for the Eagles in the South Atlantic Conference game.

• UTC football coaches will be the guest speakers for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. The Mocs coaches will talk about the just-signed 2012 recruiting class and give a preview of spring practice.

• The Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet is set for 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Chattanooga Convention Center. In addition to 22 new inductees, the event will honor former McCallie and UTC football player Joel Bradford and Baylor swimmer Kristen Vredeveld as athletes of the year and Tommy Layne, Rita Fanning, David Barger and the late Kainen Boring as other special award winners. The recipient of the organization's top annual honor, the Fred Gregg Jr. Award, will be announced soon. Tickets cost $35 and are available through Hall of Fame president John Farr at 875-9282.
