Fire hazard fears in another federally subsidized electric car

Friday, January 1, 1904

Fisker Automotive, a company that got a loan guarantee of more than half a billion dollars from U.S. taxpayers, recently recalled hundreds of its $100,000 luxury electric hybrid sedans. Why? There was concern that the batteries in the sedan, called the Karma, are a fire hazard.

Ironically, the vehicle that has been recalled is actually assembled in Finland, even though the company is heavily subsidized by the U.S. government. Fisker told ABC News it couldn't find a facility in the United States that could do the work.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is already looking into fire risks in the also-subsidized Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in electric vehicle.

Does anybody really think American taxpayers are getting a good return on all these government "investments" in often-unpopular "green" vehicles?

The evidence seems to suggest we aren't.
