Wesleyan closes out first-place seasons

The Tennessee Wesleyan College basketball teams closed out their first-place Appalachian Athletic Conference seasons with home wins Saturday against Reinhardt, 68-50 in the women's game and 62-54 in the men's.

Heather Gibson and Cody Houck scored 14 points apiece and Michelle Davis had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs (22-7, 15-3), ranked 16th in NAIA Division II. Leah Frazier and Jaryn Davis had four assists each.

Quincy Scates and Desmond Crisp scored 17 and 16 points for the Bulldogs (21-9, 14-2) against second-place Reinhardt (16-11, 11-5), and E'Jay Ward had 10 assists and five steals.

Bryan's Lady Lions gave second-place Union College a battle but lost 74-68 and will host Columbia (S.C.) College on Monday at 7 p.m. as the eighth seed in the AAC tournament. Sara Barnett scored 16 points and Morgan Burnette and Anna Thomas had 14 and 13 with seven and 10 rebounds for Bryan. Lindsey Waters led Union with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Dion Fair had 12 points and four assists and Tim Fortenberry and Lavonte Henderson scored 11 and 10 points in Bryan's 65-57 win over the Union men. The Lions' AAC seeding is still up in the air.

Angela Spann and Hollie German scored 15 and 14 points as Lee's Lady Flames went to 28-1 by beating Voorhees 78-51. Chattanoogan Courtney McDuffie led the visitors with 18 points.

NAIA Division I's 14th-ranked Lee men lost 83-82 to visiting No. 9 Mountain State despite 20 points by Ryan Westbrooks and 13 rebounds by Josh Henley.

Walters State's 12th-ranked women won 53-44 at Chattanooga State in TCCAA play, avenging one of their two losses, but the host Tigers won 56-52 after trailing 19-8. Andrew Houts scored 22 points with four 3s and Tre' Webb had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Chattanooga State.

Akia Jones had 20 points and Portia Durrett added 16 plus 14 rebounds for the Lady Senators (23-2, 16-1), countering 20 points and three steals by Jasmain Carey and 12 points by Jessica King for the Lady Tigers.

Cleveland State's women rallied past Roane State, 84-79, but the Cougars fell 82-76. Jessica Harper scored 26 points for the Lady Cougars (10-15, 4-12), including a spectacular shot that gave them their first lead at 60-59, while Hannah Brown scored 20 and Robyn Anthony and Shanavian Woodland added 14 and 11. Jill Herman's 28 and Kayla Gibson's 19 led Roane.

Nick Ross had 42 points with nine 3s in defeat for the Cleveland men (12-12, 6-10), and Travis Jones scored 17. Cedric Clinkscales and Kinard Gadsen-Gilliard led the Raiders with 21 and 18 points, Clinkscales adding 14 rebounds.
