Chattanooga police are investigating a shooting incident that allegedly occurred near 1833 Southern Street around 10 p.m. New Year's Day.

The victim of the shooting, 43-year-old Tracey Appleberry, told police that he and a buddy were going to visit a female friend when they were surprised by four black males who emerged from behind the residence and began shooting at them.

Appleberry was hit in the hand and right thigh, police said.

The two were able to escape from the suspects and call police.

Police met the victims on Ocoee St. and Appleberry was later transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Police say they haven't been able to obtain an adequate description of the suspects and there are inconsistencies in the accounts of the shooting.

Investigators are still talking to the victim and potential witnesses to gather more information. Stay with the Times Free Press for updates.
