Pupusas: Stuffed tortillas big on flavor

The space next to Niedlov's Breadworks on East Main Street has undergone quite a transformation since it first opened as Taco Rico. Still, Salvadoran foods, including pupusas, have remained on the menu at what is now Conga Latin Food.

I've underestimated these little stuffed tortillas since first trying them a couple of years ago. I usually end up taking a few home.

On my recent visit, I picked up a standard order, which is two, of the pork-filled variety and added Spanish rice and black beans. The to-go box came with Platanos Fritos (fried plantains) and containers of mango and chimichurri sauces. They were served with a delicious vinegar-based slaw. It's worth asking for. The chimichurri -- parsley, oregano, garlic, olive oil, vinegar and red pepper flakes -- is worth the visit all by itself.

Don't let the unfamiliar intimidate you. These dishes were neither spicy nor overly exotic. The pupusas are shaped like a pancake. Imagine a Hot Pocket, with cheese and meat stuffed inside a corn tortilla. They are delicious and make for a tasty appetizer or meal.
