Volkswagen today reported that December sales in the United States climbed over 36 percent and hit its highest mark for the month since 1972.

Sales of the Chattanooga-made Passat grew to 6,884 in the month, up from 6,018 in November, as the local plant continues to ramp up production, the German automaker said.

For all of 2011, VW booked sales of 324,402 units, a 26.3 percent gain in overall sales over 2010. That's the company's best annual figure since 2002.

"We look forward to carrying this momentum into 2012," said Jonathan Browning, chief executive of VW Group of America.

Jetta sedan sales totaled 150,515 for 2011, which is a 54.5 percent increase over 2010, according to the carmaker.
