Flames win for Brown's 300th as coach

Lee University men's basketball coach Tommy Brown returned from a four-game suspension Saturday and got a milestone win.

The Flames defeated visiting Belhaven 89-78 in a Southern States Athletic Conference crossover game, giving the Chattanooga native 300 wins in 451 games as a college coach. He's won 165 at the Cleveland school.

Ryan Westbooks hit 10 of 13 shots from the field and scored 27 points for Lee (9-3, 4-2), while Tyrone Caldwell had 17 points and nine assists. Duran Blue had six assists and was one of three Flames with 10 points each.

The Lady Flames (14-1, 6-0) beat Belhaven 86-74 with Angela Spann scoring 20 points, Kally Eldridge contributing 16 points and six assists and Hollie German scoring 13 points.

At Dayton, the Bryan men beat Milligan 79-55 after the Lady Buffs gave Bryan's Lady Lions their fifth straight loss, 89-65, in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. Rob Riley had 27 points and Lavonte Henderson scored 15 for the Lions (7-11, 2-2). Chattanooga's Kayla Kelly with 10 points was one of four Milligan women in double figures, out of 18 who played, while the Lady Lions (10-6, 1-4) were led by Morgan Burnette with 16 points and three blocked shots. Sara Barnett scored 13 points and Anna Thomas and Kayla Dilts added 12 apiece in defeat.

Also in the AAC, Tennessee Wesleyan's Lady Bulldogs beat Columbia (S.C.) 86-71 as Michelle Davis scored 20 points and Candace Cain and Cody Houck each added 16.

Covenant's Lady Scots won 42-38 over winless Wesleyan (Ga.), which dressed only five players, as Jessie Blankenship had 12 points and nine rebounds in the Great South Athletic Conference game. The Lady Scots scored 17 consecutive points in one 12-minute stretch of the second half, after trailing by 14.

Sewanee's men beat Centre for the first time since December 2005, 85-78, as Anvil Nelson shot 9-of-10 from the field in scoring 20 points and Valentino Bryant had 17 points and eight rebounds. Brett Bouldin and Tyler Brown scored 14 and 13 points for the Tigers, who shot 55 percent from the field and were 11-of-24 from 3-point distance in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game.

The Sewanee women lost 68-43, however; Dana Middleton led in defeat with 13 points.

In a junior college doubleheader, host Cleveland State beat the Chattahoochee Tech women 85-61 but lost 78-68 in the men's game. Hannah Brown scored 16 points and Chelsea Jones, Brittany Ramsey and Robyn Anthony added 15, 14 and 10 for the Lady Cougars (5-9), while Shanavian Woodland had 11 rebounds. Tequilla Vaughns and Tiayra Green had 18 and 17 points for Chattahoochee.

Travis Jones and Nick Ross scored 21 points each for the Cougars (7-6), while Barry Griffin had 12 points and Gerard Gore grabbed 12 rebounds. Brannon Hopkins led Chattahoochee Tech with 21 points, and Darius Davis added 16. The Eagles hit 22 of 31 free throws while Cleveland State was making 13 of 22.
