Saturday slaying victim identified

A man shot and killed Saturday night in the yard of a home on North Orchard Knob Avenue has been identified as Demarcus Husband, 23.

Police found Husband's body after receiving several calls of shots fired in the area. No arrest had been made as of Sunday night, police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary said.

In a Sunday news release, police also said a 14-year-old who was shot in the upper leg in a separate event Saturday has changed his story. The youth initially told police he was walking with friends on Kirby Avenue when someone got out of a white sedan and began shooting.

Now, the youth says another group of teens approached his group and there was a verbal exchange before someone wearing a blue mask began firing, Wearysaid. No arrest had been made as of Sunday night.

In yet a third shooting oSaturday, Ronald Spence, 19, told police he was walking near Camden Street and Dodson Avenue when the shooter called out to him. While Spence was taking off his headphones, the assailant opened fire, Weary said.

Officers caught a 16-year-old suspect within a few minutes, in an abandoned house at 2009 Camden St.

The youth was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault, Weary said.

Man is stabbed at sports bar

A man was stabbed in the arm after celebrating the New Orleans Saints' win Saturday night, police said.

Darius Arabghani, 28, was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault after police said he stabbed Thomas Gulrtin, 56, Weary said.

Police were called to Fanatics Sports Bar at 7601 East Brainerd Road about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Gulrtin said he was celebrating the Saints' win over the Detroit Lions when he put his arm around Arabghani in celebratory fun. Arabghani did not like the gloating and stabbed Gulrtin with a pocket knife, Weary said.

Gulrtin was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, Weary said.

The assault was caught on surveillance video.

Police seeking robbery suspects

Police are looking for two men who broke into a couple's home on Vance Avenue late Saturday and demanded their car keys and money.

Brian and Gloria Bennett told police two black males walked into their home after they had opened the front door to allow in fresh air, Weary said.

One suspect was described as 6 feet tall, dark-skinned and skinny. He was wearing a gray zip-up hoodie, dark pants and a dark bandana on his face.

The other suspect also was 6 feet tall and skinny, but lighter-skinned, Weary said. He was wearing a gray hoodie and had his face covered.

Woman charged with child neglect

A woman was arrested after police received calls that she was passed out at 100 Frazier Ave. and had a small child with her.

Weary said Police found Savannah Downs sitting on a rock wall leaning against a building about 1 p.m. Saturday. Her 5-year-old daughter was nearby with her paternal grandmother, crying, Weary said.

Officers determined that Downs was heavily intoxicated and under the influence of an unknown prescription medication, Weary said. She was charged with child abuse/neglect, possession of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest. Her daughter was turned over to her grandmother, Weary said.
