A Georgia State Patrol trooper was injured this afternoon while trying to apprehend an alleged traffic violator in Catoosa County, authorities said.

The trooper, TFC G.K. Moss, initially attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2007 Cadillac that did not stop for a school bus that had its stop arms and lights activated, Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said.

The driver didn't stop for the trooper until pulling into a convenience store. When Moss checked the driver's name, he discovered that the driver didn't have a license, Wright said.

The driver then pulled off in his vehicle, and a pursuit ensued until the driver exited his vehicle. As Moss caught up to him on foot and attempted to apprehend him, there was a physical altercation that led to Moss being hit in the mouth, Wright said. Both Moss and the driver were taken to Erlanger at Hutcheson.

A sheriff's deputy assisted in handcuffing the driver. Wright said charges will be filed against the driver for aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing and attempting to elude, as well as for passing a stopped school bus.
