about Clay Bennett...
The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Clay, ROLL TIDE
Somebody should have "nipped this in the bud"
Gotta be the Church's fault; didn't the Head of the Church party with prostitutes and with Rome's IRS agents?
("8 comments" before I write this; where are the other six? I only see two, by carlB at 12:33 and 12:37 am).
What was the point of this one supposed to be?
You don't want conservatives and evangelicals telling people how to live . . .
So when people are allowed to live however they want, they get stupid, selfish, lazy and violent and rob and stab and shoot each other.
And then you're "sad" because giving people the freedom to be better also gives them the freedom to be worse, and "worse" is a lot easier and cheaper to be than "better."
I guess we all have our deadlines to meet . . . so you're getting paid this week anyway . . .
We had to take those comments out, Andrew. They did not get clearance from The Committee to Re-elect the President.
Mosaic sure seems to be in the "cross"hairs doesn't it? "Outreach for the sky, mister!"
The shirt would provide more personal protection if worn under a flap jacket and over a 9mm semi.

I have to agree with you there. The 9mm under a stiff, loosely fitting shirt would probably be adequate however. At least we can be thankful we do not live in DC.

Alprova,
It is probably safe for you to assume that EaTn meant "flak" jacket rather than "flap" jacket. I am sure your excellent comprehension skills were struggling with that one.
Why is everyone white?
If he would have drawn anything other than white folks - even though most of the shootings are black-on-black crimes - he would have been branded a racist. Still, the point of the cartoon is obvious. Dumb southern kids with guns on the street protecting their (slums) turf. He who owns the most cockroaches wins.
This cartoon is a puzzle to this old dim bulb. The featured character seems the least likely target of gang violence. I'm an old white guy with wife and kids and go anywhere I like in Chattanooga without concern. Is there something I should know?
So, what's a guy with a wife and two kids doing prowling around alone on Market Street at night?
Looking for trouble.
That's how people find it . . . trouble.
It's truly sad that for years those in power within the city denied the EXISTENCE of a "gang problem." Whether it was out of fear of not being able to attract businesses to the city or ignorance of what was happening in certain communities they continued to deny there was a problem. School leaders have known for years there was a "gang threat" in our communities but again they too have done little to make the public more aware of just exactly what was going on for fear more schools would be labled as unsafe as some already have been labled. With all the recent violence and murders it has become almost impossible for our leaders to continue to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it's just a minor problem.
Not only must the truth be acknowledged but something must be done to try and limit the impact on those not already heavily involved in the violence. Yes, it's going to take leadership and probably monies will have to be allocated to assist in finding a solution, but what is the alternative, continue to deny there's a problem while the body count grows and certain communities become less safe to even walk down the street without fear of being shot or stabbed? That kind of violence does not discriminate against those who are married and have families nor does it discriminate against those who have jobs and are working to make a legitimate income. Violence is an equal opportunity destroyer, race, class, religion, economic status are all non factors when it comes to violence. Maybe it cannot be stopped altogether but it can be contained through education, job training, and rejection rather than acceptance of a way of living that is really no way of living.
The guy in the Tshirt is wondering how many beating a week Fredrick would receive if he were beat twice a day.
BRP whined with: "It is probably safe for you to assume that EaTn meant "flak" jacket rather than "flap" jacket. I am sure your excellent comprehension skills were struggling with that one."
How nice of you to give Clay a rest and to point your commentary toward myself.
You're obviously still upset because I corrected misinformation contained in your poorly written praise of Ron Paul the other day.
Just be more careful to clarify exactly what you are trying to convey so that you don't find yourself upset for being corrected in the future when you write something that can be taken to mean something completely different.
Alprova,
The first step to finding a cure is to admit you have a problem!

I think Bennett’s character has that “deer in the headlights” look about him. It could be that he has been living in some kind of bubble, and this gang issue has come as a complete surprise.
That’s a pretty astute observation Mountainlaurel. I like it.
MS-13, the Bloods, the Crips, the Latin Kings (I met some of them at a friend’s beach concession), The Outlaws and other pillars of society have been causing, for the most part contained, but exceptionally violent mayhem in central Florida for years. Local county and city governments don’t like to speak about it for fear of frightening tourists. Kind of like the Mayor of Amity in the movie Jaws.
For BRP, quote: “At least we can be thankful we do not live in DC.” To that I say amen, and might want to include Chicago. Even taking the McDonald v. Chicago case into consideration.
When you consider doing the opposite of what most politicians advocate there is a high probability it would work better than their pandering solution. For example instead of banning guns, require every citizen at age 18 to take a firearms safety training course and provide them with a weapon for which they will be responsible and required to obtain a permit annually with proof they are still in possession of the weapon. They can carry or not carry but criminals will not know who is and who isn't.
Go read onetinsoldier's comment on the Times Editorial page, "The roots of Chattnooga's rising gang violence problem" and hold your nose as he insults a large percentage of people who live in Trailors in the state of Tennessee. He ignorantly seems to think that "Toothless Trailor Trash" has something to do with gang violence.
For those of you who cannot understand why gun owners oppose registration schemes...

(Alprova, that is "gun registration schemes" for those of you with especially keen powers of comprehension)
So, BRP wants to go full throttle Nazi on running every voter through the I.D. grist mill, but let every four toothed ex-husband with a plate in his head carry unfettered heat. My friend, you put the riot in patriot.
BRP wrote: "The first step to finding a cure is to admit you have a problem!"
Repeat that sentence three times the next time you are in front of a mirror.
Nothing [new] to see here, folks, so keep it moving...

It seems as if you have transferred your obsession from Mr. Bennett to myself. Oh my.
Permit me to retort with some logic used by right leaning individuals regarding other issues.
You register to vote. You register your motor vehicle. Most people register electronics that they purchase. Why not firearms?
Arguments are raised all the time that responsible owners of firearms are rarely involved in using their weapons in a crime.
Yet, just three days ago, a man who was licensed to conceal and carry shot and killed his estranged wife and mother-in-law at Hutcheson Memorial Hospital.
Personally, I am of the opinion that every firearm should be purchased legally and immediately registered to the owner. Title the darn things and transfer ownership just like we do motor vehicles. Failure to register a weapon should result in a mandatory prison term of no less than one year.
There is no legitimate need for anyone to have an operable weapon for the purpose of self-defense, capable of firing multiple rounds of ammunition that exceed what can be put into a clip, such as the weapons described in that article.
OMG !!
Al is going to retort us with some logic.
LMAO
Voters are registered to protect other voters from losing their franchise.
Autos are registered to protect other auto owners, drivers, and passengers.
Guns are registered to protect the state and they do not need or deserve protection from the citizens. They should remain eternally in fear of the citizens.
How exactly would your solution to gun control have prevented the tragedy that you referenced?
BTW ... You register electronics to get on advertising mailing lists.
So you don't want gun owners to have a round in the chamber and then insert a full clip. What is the purpose of that B.S.
tu_quoque wrote: "Voters are registered to protect other voters from losing their franchise."
Huh?
"Autos are registered to protect other auto owners, drivers, and passengers."
Well personally, I think it's all about revenue, but okay, we'll go with your assertion.
"Guns are registered to protect the state and they do not need or deserve protection from the citizens. They should remain eternally in fear of the citizens."
Your cheese just slid off of your cracker. What country do you think you live in?
Registering guns is simply a tool which goes hand-in-hand with responsible gun ownership. If people know that a gun will be easily traced back to them, they are going to double down in assuring that their weapons will not fall into the hands of someone who will misuse it.
I have a gun safe in my home. Someone may break into my home and steal all kinds of things, but my guns aren't going out that door.
"How exactly would your solution to gun control have prevented the tragedy that you referenced?"
Oh, it wouldn't have. But then voter I.D. laws that right wingers are defending to the hilt as a means to prevent voter fraud, is addressing instances of fraud that occur less frequently than the chance of being struck by lightening.
Do you not see the irony and just a hint of hypocrisy here?
"BTW ... You register electronics to get on advertising mailing lists."
No. You register electronics to establish a date from which an honorable warranty period begins.
"So you don't want gun owners to have a round in the chamber and then insert a full clip. What is the purpose of that B.S."
No, one in the chamber and a full clip is fine. What one has no need for, when it comes to personal protection and for hunting purposes, are assault weapons.
