With his team down by double digits early in its District 7-AA battle Tuesday at Notre Dame, Sequatchie County basketball coach Jason Smith knew his Indians would be patient on offense and work the ball inside.

Senior Kegan Frederick particularly was ready to do the work.

Frederick finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds, including a key offensive rebound with four seconds remaining, and the Indians held on to win 59-56.

The game was a role reversal of last season's district championship, when Sequatchie jumped out to a big lead only to see the Irish rally for the late victory.

"We'd lost the last three times we've played them. We couldn't lose to them again," Frederick said. "I had a good game tonight, but I could have no points and not care as long as we got the win."

The Indians (16-2, 4-0) hurt themselves with a 9-for-24 performance at the foul line. They missed four consecutive in the final 25 seconds but grabbed the offensive rebound on each occasion.

After Daniel Cartwright hits two free throws, Notre Dame's Sheldon Brogden missed a 3. Frederick was fouled with 5.8 seconds left, missing a pair, but grabbed his own rebound and got the ball to Cartwright, who dribbled out the final seconds.

Frederick's 19 rebounds were seven more than the entire Notre Dame team.

"We're just so small," Irish coach Brad Harris said. "I think we've come a long way since the start of the season, though. We had some chances tonight, but we just have to learn to finish."

The Irish (5-12, 0-4) led by 10 in the first half. They held a slight lead throughout the third quarter, stretching the advantage to 48-41 on a three-point play by Stedmon Ford to start the fourth. Sequatchie continued to pound the ball inside, tying the game on a Frederick hook shot.

They took the lead for good on a layup by Dakota Hudson with 1:42 remaining.

"Notre Dame did a good job of speeding us up early," said Smith, whose Indians were guilty of 18 turnovers. "We got impatient when they pressed; we just needed to slow down and move the ball around instead to taking quick shots.

"We were a lot better once we did that."

Cartwright added 21 points and five assists for the Indians. Ford led the Irish with 18 points, 12 assists and five steals. Brogden had 17 points and Kareem Orr added 13.
