Gov. Deal offers worthwhile tax cut, tax credit ideas

Like Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has proposed some tax relief for his state that merits serious consideration.

Deal's plan seeks to grow jobs by getting rid of the sales tax on energy used by manufacturers. He would also eliminate the sales tax on construction materials used in "regionally significant" projects. And he wants to rework some existing tax credits so that they can be of value to smaller businesses.

History suggests that the way to get more of something in any given economy is to tax it less. The governors of both Tennessee and Georgia fortunately seem to understand that principle.
