University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfers Stephan Jaeger and Maria Juliana Loza were recognized as winners of the school's prestigious Dayle May Award during a ceremony at the men's basketball game Thursday night honoring UTC's athletic academic honors. Dayle May Jewelers sponsors the honor for outstanding male and female athletes with high cumulative grade point averages. Jaeger, a former Baylor School student, has a 3.49 GPA as a psychology major and is a two-time Southern Conference golfer of the year currently ranked in the nation's top 10. Loza is a two-time all-conference player and has a 3.97 GPA as a mechanical engineering major.

Softball

• Former Hixson High School pitcher Dawon Millwood of Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman junior catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah were among the preseason all-conference first-team softball players announced Thursday by the South Atlantic Conference. Millwood was the league's pitcher of the year in 2011 with a 1.43 earned run average and SAC-best .186 opponents' batting average. Shoemake batted .397 with 11 home runs among her 77 hits and 41 RBIs. Lenoir-Rhyne had four first-team choices in all, and Carson-Newman had three.

Basketball

• CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Angela Spann made eight of her 10 free throws and scored 20 points with four assists in leading fifth-ranked Lee University to a 73-49 NAIA Division I win over Southern States Athletic Conference visitor Brenau on Thursday. Karley Miller had 12 points, eight rebound and four blocked shots and Hollie German and Madison Lee each scored 11 points for the Lady Flames (20-1, 12-0). Gabby Harvey was high for Brenau (9-11, 3-7) with eight points.

• Former Cleveland High School star Ish Sanders has been battling a shooting slump recently for Carson-Newman College, but his three free throws in the final 10 seconds Wednesday night gave the Eagles an upset 64-61 South Atlantic Conference basketball win at Lincoln Memorial. LMU is ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II and had won 30 home games in a row. Sanders totaled five points and shot 1-for-7 from the field but was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
