Republicans are incredibly humble. Lately they have enacted voter ID laws in many states, effectively preventing thousands of pesky democratics from casting a ballot. But when questioned about the new laws republicans refuse to accept the credit. They shake their heads and say it's not about stealing elections. It's about 'protecting the integrity of the vote.' (wink-wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean?

Once in great while, though, one of them slips up and strays from the script. Maybe they forget they're on camera. Perhaps they were having a good day and suffered a moment of good judgement.

Republican Mike Turzai, Pennsylvania's House majority leader, while recently rattling off some achievements by Pennsylvania’s Republican-led legislature, included this sugarplum:

“Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done.”

Wow! Finally one republican standing proud and positioning himself to accept the accolades which will surely rain down upon him if the GOP actually succeeds in stealing this election. Turzai might wind up Ambassador to the Bahamas, a place the Mittster is very familiar with.

Republicans should start bragging about their achievements but apparently it seems that trait does not exist in GOP DNA. Perhaps a profound lack of legislative success has mutated the gene.

Regardless, I think you all should do like state legislator Turzai.

Embrace the dark side.

Republicans really want to rig the game.

Strange though, apparently they now are endorsing obstructive government bureaucracy and regulation.

Wouldn't somebody truly committed to freedom want the government bound to provide the ID BEFORE denying votes?

And before anybody flusters themselves with a litany of things for which they need ID, do remember participatory voting is the means by which a representative government gains its legitimacy.

That means the standards are different. Very different.

It is hilarious to see African-Americans interviewed who agree that requiring an ID is not unduly harsh and indeed a good measure to stem voter fraud. This is just another process toward the right-wing effort to nationalize the id of the masses. First it's photo id's to vote, then it's photo id's to buy ammunition, then it's photo id's for jobs or to buy groceries, etc., then it's a party member id required for any of the previous.

EaTn, We already need a photo ID to do most of those things including one at the doctors office, to board an airplane, enter the White House,in some instances go to an Obama rally, open a bank account,use a credit card,the list goes on and on. so to even exist you have to have an photo ID. If you want to vote show that Photo ID. Just makes sense unless you are a liberal afraid of losing the election.

A major probe by the Justice Department between 2002 and 2007 failed to prosecute a single person for going to the polls and impersonating an eligible voter, which the anti-fraud laws are supposedly designed to stop. The new policy guts the federal work requirements that have been the foundation of that law — one of the most successful domestic policy reforms in the 20th century.

Welfare reform replaced the old Aid to Families with Dependent Children with a new program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). The underlying concept of welfare reform was that able-bodied adults should be required to work or prepare for work as a condition of receiving welfare aid.

The welfare reform law was very successful. In the four decades prior to welfare reform, the welfare caseload never experienced a significant decline. But, in the four years after welfare reform, the caseload dropped by nearly half. Employment surged and child poverty among blacks and single mothers plummeted to historic lows. Contrary to some perceptions, the formula that made welfare reform a success was not giving state governments more flexibility in operating federally funded welfare programs. The active ingredient that made the difference was requiring state governments to implement those rigorous new federal work standards.

Today the Obama administration issued a dramatic new directive stating that the traditional TANF work requirements will be waived or overridden by a legal device called a section 1115 waiver authority under the Social Security law (42 U.S.C. 1315).

Section 1115 allows HHS to “waive compliance” with specified parts of various laws. But this is not an open-ended authority: All provisions of law that can be overridden under section 1115 must be listed in section 1115 itself.

The work provisions of the TANF program are contained in section 407 (entitled, appropriately, “mandatory work requirements”). Critically, this section, as well as most other TANF requirements, is deliberately not listed in section 1115; its provisions cannot be waived. Obviously, if the Congress had wanted HHS to be able to waive the TANF work requirements laid out in section 407, it would have listed that section as waivable under section 1115. It did not do that.

In the past, state bureaucrats have attempted to define activities such as hula dancing, attending Weight Watchers, and bed rest as “work.” Welfare reform instituted work standards to block these dodges. Now that the Obama administration has abolished those standards, we can expect “work” in the TANF program to mean anything but work.

Obama’s new welfare decree guts sound anti-poverty policy. The administration tramples on the actual legislation passed by Congress and seeks to impose its own policy choices — a pattern that has become all too common in this administration.

The result is the end of welfare reform as we know it.

“Examples of such fraud have been documented throughout this nation’s history.” “Not only is risk of voter fraud real, but it could affect the outcome of a close election.”

Stevens was a liberal when he was on the Supreme Court. Was he corrupting the system when he voted for ID's being required to vote?

Furnish the original Certificate of Eligibility (DDS-579) obtained from DDS.

All documents must be in English.

Many people do not have access to their birth certificate, especially many elderly people.

There is one important difference between any requirement or stipulation to produce a photo I.D. to see a Doctor (I've never had to do so, but we'll go with it anyway), to board and airplane, to enter the White House, to attend a Presidential rally, to open a bank account, to use a credit card (this one is not universal either), to obtain a library card, or to attend a Michelle Obama book signing, and to being allowed to vote for her husband.

Do you know what that difference is?

The United States rule of law is guided and guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States.

The 14th Amendment, Section 1 states that "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

The 15th Amendment, Section 1 states that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."

The 19th Amendment states that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

The 24th Amendment, Section 1 states that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax."

And finally, the 26th Amendment, Section 1 states that "The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age."

If you will read those Amendments, the Constitution gives people reason to understand that there is a right to vote in this country extended, at the very least, to vote in Federal elections of the President, Vice President, Senators, and those we elect to the House of Representatives.

Directing your attention specifically to the 24th Amendment, where it is written that a right to vote "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax," if a person is required to pay so much as one cent to comply with a requirement to obtain a photo I.D., then they are being made to pay a tax in violation of this Amendment.

All those other instances where a photo I.D, is required to be shown prior to being allowed to proceed any further, are not guaranteed rights under the rule of law in this nation, including being allowed to have a book you just purchased signed by the First Lady.

But voting for her husband is a Constitutional assured right, and many men have died defending the rights set forth in that Constitution too.

We could debate this issue until the end of time, and it will likely never be settled. But there is two fundamental truths surrounding this movement to require everyone to produce a photo I.D. in order to be allowed to cast a vote.

1.) Those pushing for the requirement do so in the hope that votes for candidates other than those they want to see elected into office are prevented, and it is being done to purposely manipulate the outcome of elections.

2.) The type of voter fraud that any requirement to produce photo I.D. is touted to prevent, is almost non-existent. A Presidential candidate is more likely to be struck by lightening than he is to receive a vote cast for him twice by the same person.

You know the answer to that question Harp. It has been answered every single time this issue comes up.

Black people, prior to 1964 were prevented in large numbers from being allowed to give birth to children in hospitals by virtue of their skin color.

Many of those born do not have state issued birth certificates on file with their respective states. Fast forward to the year 2012, where you have states imposing photo I.D. requirements, and jave been passing laws in regard to documentation required to be allowed to have issued to them this photo I.D., which in many cases requires a certified copy of a birth certificate, and you can see the problem for many people.

A couple of states have risen above the ashes and will allow people in this situation to be allowed to sign a statement attesting to the date of their birth, or as is the case for many, they allow entries made in family Bibles to attest to the circumstances of one's birth.

It's no state secret that black people are more likely to vote for Democrats than they are Republicans. It's been that way since the 60's, if not longer.

If they are able to lift themselves out of the poverty state they might realize what has been happening to them and vote for a republican.By not getting an I.D. they can keep them on the Democratic Plantation.By keeping the minorities out of the American mainstream they keep them slaves to the government and the democratic party.They don't want them to be able to get a library card because if they do they might find a way out of their poverty status.They might read about someone who got off the "plantation" and made a good life for themselves in the real America.

Al, States can impose restrictions on peoples right to vote just as along as they do not violate those Amendments you listed above. For example in some States you can be denied the right to vote if you are a convicted felon.

Voter ID Laws are legal and make sense.

Indiana's voter I.D law, SEA 483 was held valid and voted in favor for being Constitutional for two reasons.

1.) Anyone who applied for a photographic I.D. for the purposes of complying with this particular law in the state of Indiana, can obtain it at no cost whatsoever.

2.) Anyone who is unable to provide documentation in order to be granted the issuance of a photo I.D., can still cast a provisional ballot at the polls, which still counts.

Okay, all the words in your original quote appear in the above paragraph, but lots of words separated the two quoted sentences too, so the quote was clearly taken out of context.

It's interesting to see that he cites a case of fraud in East Chicago, Indiana, albeit in that case, the kind of voter fraud cited would not have been prevented by requiring photo I.D,'s to vote.

Seems people are still confusing what rights apply here.

As I said, the burden is on the state to provide acceptable proof of identity. If that means sending a voting official with a camera to every citizen to take their picture to verify their ID, then that's what needs to be done.

Not just throwing whatever roadblocks you can in the way.

And FWIW, I find disenfranchisement to be severely problematic, especially when it's a routine process.

I've said it a hundred times, and I'll say it again; This country was more profitable and people in all income classes had more to spend when the top tax rates in this nation were 50% and above.

When the income tax was created, it was only assessed on the top income earners throughout this nation.

Is that fair? Probably not, but until the way we tax people in this nation changes to a more fair and equitable system of taxation, it's the way things are.

Everyone, including those at the top, keep voting for people that perpetuate the income tax system that everyone keeps complaining about, so who's to blame if our politicians throw it back and forth like a football at every opportunity?

Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, became the largest municipal bankruptcy in the United States, ever.

All because some loudmouths bullied politicians into not paying for anything.

It's likely that will happen here. What's worse, we know it could be coming. Our people have no idea how our state, county and city governments budget, collect or pay for anything. We could already have many of those white collar crime derivatives contracts on the books and not know it. We already have Check-Into-Cash and communist Chinese fireworks payoff schemes all over. Our "slaves learned to read" idiotic policy makers are intellectually unequipped to solve basic problems. And, it'll soon be widespread public knowledge that there will be a demand for funding when that report is unveiled tomorrow. Local GOP bigots will probably intimidate politicians by calling for the flaming crucifixion of the EPA.

There's probably a salesman posing as an investment banker flying down here right now.

Today, President Obama told businesses that the only reason they exist is because government has built the infrastructure in which they exist.

The man is a total ####### idiot, and this proves it. Commerce paid the taxes and is responsible for the growth that funded the infrastructure, not the other way around.

It was not the provision of interstate highways, for example, that spawned the invention of the automobile or the commercial truck. It was fuel taxes paid by vehicles that funded the roads.

Roads were developed to enable farmers, manufacturers and extractors of natural resources to move their goods to market. Same for the railroads, which were built with private funds for the purpose of hauling freight. The government traded land to the railroads to provide an economic incentive.

Look around at the empty store fronts; they are not empty because government built them in advance of a need. They are empty because government failed in its duty to protect them, or taxed them out of business, or destroyed the economy by failing to regulate the financial markets.

I had almost decided not to vote at all, because both choices are so poor. After this, I may have to vote against Obama because he is so out of touch with reality that even a robber baron like Romney is a better choice. Romney is at least philanthropic with the money he earned, and that's more than Obama will ever be able to claim on his own dime.

As for the empty storefronts, you can argue that it was taxes or regulations, but that's just hyperbole since you can't REALLY say definitively that was what happened. Maybe it was just the people went elsewhere, like to the Wal-Mart down the street. Or to Amazon.com

I suppose you COULD argue that government should protect Main Street over them, but somehow I doubt you would take that position.

And then there's intellectual property laws, and property rights. Just being able to OWN property is one of the things that drives a lot of business.

15th Amendment -- "The right of citizens of the United States to vote..."

19th Amendment -- "The right of citizens of the United States to vote..."

You can argue with me all day long and it will forever be meaningless. I did not write the five Amendments.

The 14th Amendment was added on June 13, 1866. The 15th Amendment was Added on February 26, 1869. The 19th Amendment was added on June 4, 1919. The 24th Amendment was added on August 27, 1962. And finally, the 26th Amendment was added on March 23, 1971.

Throughout 105 years of history, the Legislative bodies within the states in existence at the time those Amendments were voted upon, ratified them as they were written. It doesn't appear that anyone objected to the wording contained within each Amendment and they stand as written today.

Do you see what you did there? When did I even suggest that the people have any right to vote to appoint Electors to the Electoral College? I challenge you to quote any sentence that has me even suggesting such a thing.

No need to bring them up. I never even broached the subject a right of the people to vote for Electors.

No? You folks have been whining for months, claiming that his use of an Executive order involving invoking executive privilege was totally in violation of the U.S. Constitution, and yet, not one lawsuit has been heard in a court of law to date.

If you think it could not be done, despite there being virtually no chance of it being done, I suggest you brush up on Constitutional law. The 12th Amendment is very specific and it could be cited as a reason to invalidate popular elections or cited as a reason to do away with the popular vote altogether.

And it most certainly could be done by executive order too. After all, so many of you Republican Cheerleaders have harped and harped that the President is duty-bound to enforce the U.S. Constitution at all times. He even took an oath to do it.

Popular votes are not validated by the U.S. Constitution as a means by which to select the President of the United States.

It's easy to see that you are simply going to attack me, rather than to tackle the issue raised with some semblence of meritorious effort.

And you did it rudely, so it's back to ignoring you again. I'm only going to converse with you if you act like a lady.

You just refuse to look at facts. since the 2010 election, thanks to a conservative advocacy group founded by Weyrich, the GOP's effort to disrupt voting rights has been more widespread and effective than ever. In a systematic campaign orchestrated by the American Legislative Exchange Council - and funded in part by David and Charles Koch, the billionaire brothers who bankrolled the Tea Party - 38 states introduced legislation this year designed to impede voters at every step of the electoral process. All told, a dozen states have approved new obstacles to voting. Kansas and Alabama now require would-be voters to provide proof of citizenship before registering. Florida and Texas made it harder for groups like the League of Women Voters to register new voters. Maine repealed Election Day voter registration, which had been on the books since 1973. Five states - Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia - cut short their early voting periods. Florida and Iowa barred all ex-felons from the polls, disenfranchising thousands of previously eligible voters. And six states controlled by Republican governors and legislatures - Alabama, Kansas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin - will require voters to produce a government-issued ID before casting ballots. More than 10 percent of U.S. citizens lack such identification, and the numbers are even higher among constituencies that traditionally lean Democratic - including 18 percent of young voters and 25 percent of African-Americans.
