Only God gives power to men

Words of wisdom to all politicians running in this election cycle: Even the most powerful person in the world only maintains that power as God gives him breath. Once he draws that last breath, he will have to stand before God and be judged on how he attained that power.

"What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?" Matthew 16:26.

Citizens need Norton on bench

Judge David Norton has served the people of Hamilton County since 1984, when he joined the Hamilton County attorney's office. He was appointed judge for Soddy-Daisy in 1985 and was re-elected three times.

Judge Norton has done a superb job as General Sessions judge since March of this year, when he was appointed to fill Judge Bob Moon's seat. His legal knowledge and judicial temperament are what the citizens of Hamilton County need. There's not a learning curve for this position, which is why Judge Norton's experience is invaluable.

Blood donor ends 40 years as supplier

Last month, Blood Assurance celebrated its 40th anniversary. Last month, I celebrated my 40th anniversary as a donor of whole blood to Blood Assurance.

I have donated 184 pints, or 23 gallons, of whole blood. I believe that I am the top donor of whole blood to Blood Assurance.

As I am 92 years old and as I am having trouble with my hemoglobin count, I decided that it is time for me to retire as a donor.

Repeal is not the way to go

The Obama health-care package that the Republicans are trying to get rid of is, at best, a mediocre healthcare coverage for all Americans. But ...

Repeal is not the solution. Even the most right-wing conservative will agree that a bad plan is better than no plan at all. A bad plan can be fixed. A non-existent plan cannot be fixed. While the Republican congressional leadership seems fixed on seeing to it that all of us who are insured pay for all of those who are too lazy or too cheap to provide for themselves, this should not be the position taken by the present Congressman from the Third District of Tennessee.

Since he has voted with the leadership 95 percent of the time, however, we can be sure that he will vote for repeal. The other candidates are no better. Only the Democratic candidate seems to be reasonable. Perhaps she represents the views of the people.

It's enough to make the left look wonderful.

Opinion language shows contempt

The kind of insulting language you aimed at Sen. Lamar Alexander in the next-to-last paragraph of Thursday's (July 12) "Open letter to Alexander" was uncalled for and certainly did nothing to strengthen any argument you intended to make. Although I often disagreed with Mr. Lee Anderson, he was always gentlemanly in his remarks and never sank to your kind of expression of utter contempt.

Be factual in ranting tirades

The Free Press' continuing negative comments and ugly implications about President Obama's worthiness as our leader are disgusting. You could at least be more honestly factual regarding your ranting tirades, rather than just always pushing the envelope of fear and distrust.

The article, dated June 25, 2011, ("Taking the nation hostage") should be re-read by you and your staff. The article factually tells how our nation got in this mess under the previous leadership.

CHARLIE BENSON, I think more than a few self-professed Christians may find themselves disappointed in the After Life. Or even worse, in the non-existence thereof.

CARL HANSEN, even the Republicans admit they can't come up with a better plan, since this WAS their plan. It's why Mitt Romney loved it. The only thing Obama took out was the abortion coverage.

JANE N. LUPTON, well, I can't agree with you about Anderson, but you are correct in that it showed the weakness of their case.

NORMAN DAVIS, they can't be factual, if they were, they'd be in trouble. Mendacity is their way, combined with Hyperbole.

Only Man gives power to God.

The Biblical Jehovah, by his own admission, is the ultimate mass murderer. His unholy reign continues today through the fanatic and war-like true believers of western beliefs systems (Islam, Jewish, and Christian).

"What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and lives his life with a blind irrational belief in a cruel, murdering, petty, invisible, and despicable tyrant?"

Charlie Benson,

No "wisdom" there at all ... model this life in fear of some magical being's disapproval after I die ... could you come up with anything more stupid or irrational?

Maybe you could have sold that snake oil a few hundred years ago, but anyone with an ounce of common sense and who is even remotely connected to reality realizes how absurd that advice is.

The Thumpers are down at the Hamilton County Commission Office looking for talking snakes and asses (see the Bible, Genesis 3:4, Numbers 22:30).

Guess what? They found them!

For you to use the word "knowledge" and then follow with a statement that would imply an inability to explore and discover, shows your contempt for the very definition of words.

If you are interested in accretion, geology, plate tectonics, and the many other aspects of planetary development, I would suggest that you study these things.

To offer opinions pertaining to things you are unwilling to invest the intellectual effort towards gathering the knowledge and understanding seems a little... well... silly.

Actually, if you are interested in these "foundations being laid" I would also suggest that you get a telescope and explore the sky. We've been doing it for quite a while now. Though, your church probably doesn't want you to use a telescope that allows you to look into the "heavens".. or know anything at all about the world around you.

"Cleveland Church of the Harvest Pastor Henry "Hank" Davis has been indicted on two counts of sexual battery by a Polk County Grand Jury."

Touched by an Angel? Thank god he's a Pastor, laying on hands and spreading the love of Jesus. I'm sure he was searching for a witch's mark or checking for ticks. Maybe he was acting out the story of Lot and his two daughters in the cave.

Whatever it is, you can trust a Man of god! Just ask Jim Bakker.

daytonsdarwin,

Saint John 8- "But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up Himself, and saw none but the woman, He said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

Seems that Pastor Hank "I Like 'Em Young" Davis has been in trouble before in laying on hands. In March 2002, Touchy-Feely Davis received a suspended sentence for assaulting a girl under 18 by biting her on the buttocks and thigh.

http://www.chattanoogan.com/2002/3/21/19523/Cleveland-Minister-Hank-Davis-Gets.aspx

Having been told by the judge to stay away from any contact with girls under 18, seems Pastor Davis was doing his ministerial duties and looking for concubines.

Now I understand what he was hoping to "Harvest" at his Holy-Spirit filled church.

But it's OK; it was a female. Praise god he's not a homo committing perverse acts on boys.

This is from the "Church of the Harvest" website.

" Queen for a Day – Outreach to ladies in the community where we can show God’s love for them in a most unique way. For the last decade, we have been bringing women in for “Queen for a Day”, a day to honor them as women, as mommies, and most of all as daughters of the King. Through a day of beauty makeovers, catered luncheon, new outfits, dramatic presentations of the gospel, special mementos, and a glamour photo, and the one-on-one attention, we strive to remind each and every woman of the purpose and plan that God has for them. It is a day for them to forget the cares of this world. It is a day for them to have words of life spoken into them. It is a day for them to see and know the heart of God. Furthermore, it is a day for us to be the hands, feet and voice of their loving Father."

Want to have your wife/daughter's glamor photo made by Pastor Davis? One can only imagine the "special memento" Pastor Davis has in mind.

malluschristus wrote about Jesus and the prostitute; "He [Jesus] lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."

Just then a large rock came from the crowd, hit the prostitute on the head, instantly killing her.

Jesus turned to the crowd and said. "Mother, I told you to stop following me around!"

I saw the Wholly Spook last week at Denny's having a Grand Slam breakfast. Bigfoot and Superman had coffee, and the Invisible Man had pancakes and bacon.

Wouldn't you know it? The Spook disappeared without paying his tab. That's what happens when you have a narcissistic god complex.

A couple of prophets were there too. Their hair shirts, sack-cloths, and matted hair were filthy and they reeked of self-importance and body odor. They appeared to have been on a meth binge for weeks.

You'd think with their great power they could find soap, water, and a toothbrush.

So.. MC, you're protesting/abstaining from education??

Is that what you are trying to tell me with your mumbling and fumbling attempts at communication?

You speak of the "heavens" but refuse to look into them?

How do you think God feels (with "his" human emotions) about you're using "his" existence for your worldly purposes in subjugating your fellow man? Claiming that his mind and yours are the same?

Sounds pretty blasphemous to me.

Helloooooo.. Anybody home in there? All I keep hearing from you are the echos of a vacuous mind.
