North Georgia primary election turnout mixed

In North Georgia counties where early voting records doubled and tripled, turnout today has been mixed, elections officials say.

Walker County turnout was lower then normal, except in Chickamauga where turnout was high with more than 400 votes by noon, officials said. In early voting, numbers were high specifically for popular races such as the sole commissioner contest between Bebe Heiskell and Paul Shaw.

In Whitfield County, turnout was "fairly light" this morning, election technician Carol Byers said.

"It rained this morning, but we're hoping it will pick up around 5," she said.

In Dade County, there wasn't a higher-than-normal influx of people, officials said.

But in early voting, numbers were high, as many voters came out for the sheriff's race in which three Republican candidates and one Democratic candidate are trying to beat out incumbent Sheriff Patrick Cannon.

No one was available for comment this afternoon in Catoosa County.
