Early election results show Northwest Georgia voters rejected the controversial transportation sales tax referendum by a large majority.
With 10 of 15 counties reporting totals, the sales tax was voted down by 67.5 percent in the 15-county district in Northwest Georgia. Across the state most districts appeared to be rejecting the sales tax increase.
The transportation special purpose local option sales tax was designed to allow voters in each district to decide if they wanted their sales tax increased by one percent.
But criticism across the state questioned whether the sales tax would hurt the economy in the long run and if larger counties would lose money for the smaller counties within the district.
The 18-billion project would last for 10 years.
