Leslie Barker Thomas of Ellijay, Ga., was recently presented the William Cox Memorial Award by the Georgia chapter of the Trail of Tears Association. The award recognizes the association's top volunteer of the year.
Thomas is vice president of the Georgia chapter, president of the Gilmer County Historical Society, a board member for Chieftains Museum in Rome, Ga., and for the Gilmer County Genealogy Society. She is the editor of several newsletters and has written numerous historical magazine and newspaper articles.
Jeff Bishop, chapter president, credited Thomas with obtaining speakers and locations for meetings, sending email reminders to the membership and editing the chapter's newsletter. He said she has also written grants for the association.
• The United States Achievement Academy announces that Cynthia Noelle Scolet of Ringgold, Ga., has been named an All-American Scholar.
Scolet was valedictorian of the 2012 class of Calvary Christian School. She is the daughter of James and Janet Scolet of Ringgold.
• Rollins College student Jordan Thomas was recently inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement and meaningful contribution to the Rollins community. He is a graduate of McCallie School.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, East Tennessee Chapter, in Kingsport, Tenn., announced new appointments to its board of directors recently. Michelle Patrick of Harrison was this area's new board representative.
Retirees of Cleveland State Community College gathered on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus recently to do research for a publication on the history of the college.
They searched archives, identifying people in photos dating back to the college's inception in 1967.
The new history will be an update of the original written by Sue Little, "Morning Has Broken." That book covered the years 1967-1978, and the new one will cover the years since that publication.
