Kneadful things

Four area restaurants are turning up the heat for a Best Biscuits cook-off from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Creative Discovery Museum.

Vying for honors are The Big Biscuit Barn (Fort Oglethorpe), Countryside Cafe (Ooltewah), The Square Meal (Trenton, Ga.) and Bluegrass Grill (Chattanooga). All four were nominated to participate, and a champion will be crowned at 3 p.m., with voting decided by guests who sample the creations. Because biscuits are seldom served alone, a jam and honey station will be available.

"Perhaps no other food smacks of Southern culture more than the biscuit. Flaky and moist, dense and compact, sweet or dry, no other food is so easily recognized, loved and devoured as the biscuit," said Liza Blair, the museum's arts manager.

"Our goal for this event is simple: to provide guests with a taste experience and a chance to see how something as common as the biscuit can reflect a wide range of taste and talent representative of Southeast bakers."

This is the fourth year in a row that CDM has hosted a food-tasting event. Previously, banana puddings and cobblers were considered.

The event is part of Arts-Live, a year-round program connecting kids with visual and performing artists. Admission is included in the museum entrance fee ($11.95).
