Changes making things shadier at Bonnaroo

Shade has always been a hot commodity at Bonnaroo and festival organizers have introduced new elements, such as this large screen area. They also planted 110 trees that will provide shade during future festivals.

Maybe it’s just coincidental that the weather for Bonnaroo 2012 has been the most pleasant in the festival’s 11-year history, but organizers have added new elements for producing shade on the grounds.

Organizers bought most of the 700-acre property in 2007 and have been making changes ever since. In the past, they’ve added electricity and gravel roads. This year they planted 110 trees and put up screening that adds shade without diminishing sight lines.

“We are always looking at ways to make it better for the fans,” said Ashley Capps, owner of AC Entertainment, co-producers of the festival.

The trees provide little shade this year, but Capps said they are part of the long-term plan.

Music got under way at 12:15 p.m. with The Kooks playing on the Which Stage, the second largest at the festival.

The steady stream of helicopters has also begun. They ferry the bigger acts into the site from Nashville.
