Jamie Flegal will be a little lonely late this summer when her only child heads off to Auburn University.

About two years ago she started playing golf so she could enjoy time with her son, Tim Travis.

"I feel like he's flying out of the nest, and I thought what can I do with my son even when he's grown up," Flegal said. "If I ask him to go shopping for four hours, he's not going to do it. But if I ask if you want to play 18 holes, he'd say yes.

"I want to have a good time with my son."

The two played 18 holes at Brainerd on Tuesday.

"It's cool that my mom plays," Travis said. "I never thought she'd get the hang of it, but she's beat me a couple times.

"It's OK if you get beat by your dad, but you can't let your mom beat you. But it happens."

Flegal grew up in South Korea, lived two years in Guam and one year in Florida before moving to this area 17 years ago. She has been an American citizen for nearly 20 years.

Her favorite golfers are Tom Watson, Annika Sorenstam and Jiyai Shin, who is among the Koreans dominating the LPGA Tour.

"I'm very proud of them," Flegal said. "It's a small country but they're winning all the time."
