5 set state marks in Market St. Mile and other sports news

Calvin Cofield of McDonald ran the fastest mile Saturday morning in the Market Street Mile event from the Tennessee Aquarium Plaza. The 22-year-old finished in 4 minutes, 30.13 seconds. Isaac Pacheco, 17, from Crandall, Ga., was second in 4:47.31, and Ross Tighman of Chattanooga was third in 4:54.48. Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga standout Anneli Morrison was the women's winner and 13th overall in 5:19.68. She was one of five participants Saturday who set Tennessee records for their ages, and grand masters winner Hugh Enicks of Signal Mountain eclipsed the previous best for 52-year-old men but was short Saturday of masters winner Mark Carver from Nashville, who is also 52 and ran a 4:55.57. That was fourth overall. Octavio Cruz of Chatsworth set the record for 7-year-olds with a 5:48.37, 24th overall, and Sergio Bianchini of East Ridge broke the standard for 71-year-olds with his 6:24.41. Evelyn Olson was the last finisher Saturday but established a state record for 86-year-old women with her 25:37.87. The Vradenburgh sisters from Chattanooga -- Kathryn, 11; Karla, 17; and Kiersten, 21 -- won back-to-back-to-back age groups.

• Bryson Harper from Sequatchie County High School, who just completed his Bryan College eligibility, was announced this past week as a Capital One Academic All-America College Division first-team member for cross country and track and field. Bryan juniors Jason McLeod and Alex Stephens were third-team selections. Candidates must be key contributors for their teams and also have cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Harper was a three-time NAIA All-American in indoor track, a two-time All-American in cross country and a one-time outdoor track All-American. He earned all-conference honors eight times in his career and was a five-time league champion and a three-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete. He had a 3.90 GPA at the time of his Academic All-America nomination and was the Dayton school's 2012 Exercise and Health Science top student and received the "Lion of Valor" as the top overall male student-athlete. Stephens, from Cleveland High, and McLeod of Ocoee, Fla., each has been an All-American once and all-conference multiple times, and they had GPAs of 3.79 and 3.81 when nominated.

GOLF

• WICHITA, Kan. -- Former Baylor School golf standout Luke List moved into a tie for sixth place with a 68 Saturday in the third round of this weekend's Nationwide Tour event, the Wichita Open at Crestview Country Club. He's at 203, five shots behind leader Jim Herman, a former University of Cincinnati golfer who lives now in Florida. Casey Wittenberg of Memphis is second at 200. List, who is second on the Nationwide money list, had a 64 Friday after opening with a 71.

• Two teenage golfers from Rocky Face, Ga., Ethan Hayes and Tucker Snipes, are in the 89-player field for the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier Monday and Tuesday at the University of Georgia Course in Athens. They will be playing for four spots and two alternate positions in the 65th annual national event July 16-21 in Stratham, N.Y. The field will be cut after Monday's round to the low 27 scores and ties and anyone else within eight shots of the lead.

• Randy Bowman of Summerville, Ga., will be among the 111 golfers playing Tuesday at Atlanta National Golf Club in Alpharetta for three spots and two alternate positions in the 33rd annual U.S. Senior Open Championship set for July 12-15 in Lake Orion, Mich.

BASKETBALL

• Former UTC player Jenaya Wade-Fray, announced Friday as a member of Great Britain's first Olympics women's basketball team, is a Bermuda native who already has made 24 international appearances for Britain, starting in 2010 when she was Bermuda's female athlete of the year. She helped Great Britain qualify for the EuroBasketball finals for the first time in 2011. Wade-Fray's Lady Mocs career ended in March 2010 with the most games (131) in program history. She is third with 214 career 3-pointers made for UTC.
