Children get a chance to shine during the sixth annual Patriotism at the Post, an Independence Day celebration set for Tuesday at the polo field in Fort Oglethorpe.

The Patriotic Kids Contest starts at 7:30 p.m. Children 12 and younger will line up at the bandstand on Barnhardt Circle to show off their best red, white and blue ensembles. The boy and girl deemed the "best decorated" will each win a $50 gift card. Winners of the Patriotic Kids Coloring Contest, sponsored by the Times Free Press, also will be announced. Rolling Video Games will be there from 7-9 p.m. for the children.

New for 2012 is the Tabernacle Big Band, a full 1940s-era band with four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and rhythm section. The group performs jazz and patriotic arrangements as well as Glenn Miller-style swing arrangements. "We want to see people in front of the stage dancing and everyone joining in for the patriotic sing-along," said John Feezell, who plays trumpet.

The show opens with Miller's "In the Mood," he said. The free concert begins at 8 p.m., followed by fireworks at dark.

Parking at the polo field is $5 per car. Erlanger at Hutcheson's Auxiliary will provide a handicap shuttle. Donations will be accepted for the band. For more information, email info@6thcavalrymuseum.com or call 706-861-2860.
