Monica Hammers, 41, faces a charge of attempted first degree murder after she allegedly tried to suffocate her 4-year-old son while he was at Erlanger hospital, according to Chattanooga Police Department.

A trial date has been set for a mother charged with trying to smother her 4-year-old son at Erlanger hospital.

On Wednesday afternoon Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman set a Sept. 25 trial date for 42-year-old Monica Dawn Hammers. She is free on a $55,000 bond and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.

Assistant District Attorney Charlie Minor is prosecuting the case against Hammers, and Harry Christensen is her defense attorney. Both sides agreed to a pretrial hearing on Aug. 20 to finalize the trial schedule.

Minor would not comment on the pending case, citing district attorney office policy.

Police arrested Hammers after a witness at the hospital told security officers that she put a pillow over her son's face when he began to cry and told him to shut up, according to court documents.

The boy was placed in protective custody following the incident. Because of his status as a minor, further information was not available.

He had been taken to the hospital on May 6, 2011, for a broken arm that was scheduled to be reset, according to the arrest report.
