Rossville police Officer Nathan Baker has announced he is running for sheriff in Dade County, Ga.
Baker, with 13 years experience in law enforcement, is running against incumbent Sheriff Patrick Cannon and former Dade County Chief Deputy Tim McDonald in the GOP primary election.
If elected sheriff, the 33-year-old Baker said he would like to patrol as much as possible to talk firsthand with residents about their needs.
"Some have said a sheriff's job is just too busy to patrol," he said in a written statement. "I want to show citizens a new approach to the county's law enforcement capability."
Baker also said he would like to hire a second-shift detective to cut down on sheriff's office overtime expenses. When a detective is assigned a case the victim would be contacted to follow up on the case status within 48 hours, he said.
He also would like to hold a town hall meeting once a month in a different community to try to deter crime through community participation.
"Community involvement is the backbone of teamwork," Baker said.
Baker was hired at the Dade County Sheriff's Office in 1999 as a detention officer and later became a shift supervisor and was assigned to road patrol. Baker resigned from the sheriff's office in 2008 to run for sheriff.
In 2009, he was hired at the Rossville Police Department.
