Boyd doubles key Bryan past Union

Catcher DeWayne Boyd was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs as Bryan College began its Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball weekend series at Union College with a 5-4 win Friday. His courtesy runner, Zach Hensley, scored twice.

Tyler Latham doubled and singled and both scored and drove in a run for the Lions (18-7, 2-2), and Adam Sanders added to his school record with his ninth save this season, despite giving up a run with his five outs. Kenny Knudsen preceded him with three innings of two-hit relief to get the win. Union was ranked 12th in the NAIA preseason poll but is 7-11, 0-1.

• Lee 9, Loyola (La.) 0: At Cleveland, Kris Hall struck out 15 batters in eight innings and Blake Barber went 3-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and two driven in as the NAIA's third-ranked Flames rose to 23-2-1, 10-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Roberto Duran was 2-for-3 with a homer and Jorge Saez and Trevor Burgess also had two hits each for Lee, and Mike Fasolo finished the two-hitter for Hall (6-0).

• Covenant 5, Ave Maria 3: At Naples, Fla., brothers James and Chris Rollins each tripled and singled and had an RBI in the Scots' win in the Hank Burbridge Classic. Kurt Wiles scored twice and David Lockwood also had an RBI for Covenant (5-4), and Tyler Smith pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts.
