CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Nearly 600 high school juniors came to Cleveland State Community College on Friday to learn about the college and the admissions process.

The students, from Bradley Central, Walker Valley and Cleveland high schools, spent the day in sessions ranging from financing to choosing a major, resume writing and preparing for the ACT.

It was the first "Catch The Fever College Tour" for Cleveland State.

Students went from one session to another in buildings across campus, getting a taste of college life as they hurried from one class to another.

Jalesa Perkins said she was using the day to help make her decision on a school.

"I honestly do not know how to write a resume. But I have really learned a lot," she said during a break.

During the resume session, students were told their resume is not just about listing their qualifications on paper anymore. It is also about how they appear on social media, they were told.

When the students arrived Friday morning, Cleveland State President Dr. Carl Hite told them they are in a different world from previous generations.

"We want to make sure you are ready," he said.

Freddie Perez said his interest was the ACT preparation.

In that session, Judy Knight from the college's testing center reviewed the ACT and offered pointers. Be familiar with the test directions before taking the test to save time, she said. Perform "question triage," she advised, by answering all the questions you know in a section before going back to the harder questions.

Christian Torbett said he was at the event "to learn more about paying for college. I already know where I am going. I don't really need help making that decision."

If all went well, Hite said, the college may consider taking the program to other counties in its service area, including Polk, McMinn, Monroe and Meigs.
