Reporter's Notebook: Hamilton County Commissioner Chester Bankston explains discretionary spending

Hamilton County Commissioner Chester Bankston said a recent Times Free Press story about commissioners' discretionary spending doesn't sit well with some people in his district.

Bankston said he had no control over two of this year's allocations -- $80,000 to the East Hamilton Middle/High School baseball field and $75,000 to the Apison Fire Hall and Community Center.

Those funds were committed by former District 9 County Commissioner Bill Hullander, Bankston said.


The Hamilton County Pachyderm Club will host U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann this week.

The club meets at noon Monday at the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel on Chestnut Street.


Hamilton County's JFK Club will host President Barack Obama's statewide coordinator, Justin Wilkins, this week.

Wilkins will address the group Monday at noon at Blue Orleans, which is at the northwest corner of Market and Main streets.
