THINGS I WISH MY KIDS WOULD ASK ME

Barry Courter has a 23-year-old son who recently graduated from college and an 18-year-old daughter who is a senior in high school.

Q: Dad, what can you tell me about interning or job shadowing?

A: Both are great ways to learn about a career you might be interested in. In high school, you should find someone doing a job you are interested in and call them up. Be willing to work around their schedule if you can. You'd like to visit on a typical day, but one that also promises to have some activities. Job shadowing can give you a real-life sense of the job.
