GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Led by a fifth-place 70 from sophomore Jordan Britt, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team compiled a first-round 302 Friday and is tied with 14th-ranked Baylor for 10th place in the 17-team SunTrust Gator tournament. Second-ranked Alabama and No. 10 Georgia are first and second at 284 and 286, and Georgia's Emilie Burger is the individual leader at 67. Alabama senior Brooke Pancake from Chattanooga and Baylor School and teammate Hannah Collier are tied with Britt, who played at GPS and Signal Mountain. UTC's next best scores Friday were Mette Kryger's 75 and Sophie Weilguni's 77. The UTC men's team plays Sunday through Tuesday in the Collegiate Match Play presented by Callaway at Bradenton, Fla.

Running

• TAMPA, Fla. -- UTC junior Lucas Cotter won the men's 1500-meter run in a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 51.92 seconds Friday as the outdoor track and field season began at the USF Bulls Invitational meet. Teammate Emmanuel Kirwa won the men's 3000 in 8:35.79, and the Mocs' Chris Berry and Mark Cole were second and fourth in the 5000 in 14:34.86 and 15:18.05. Freshman Dezerick Frazier was seventh in the 400 in 48.69, 0.34 second off the UTC record, and the Lady Mocs' Keeley Stewart and Amanda Sumner were fifth in the women's 3000 and seventh in the 1500, respectively. Joshue Vasquez was eighth in the race Cotter won. "It was a great day," UTC coach Bill Gautier said. "We had a lot of positives from both the men and the women."

• BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Red Bank High School track coach Hugh Enicks of Signal Mountain finished fifth in his 50-54 age group in the 3000-meter run Friday of the national masters track and field meet at the University of Indiana. The 9:59 time was a personal record at that distance for Enicks, who is running the mile today. Those are relatively short distances for the retired Army lieutenant colonel, a multiple marathon winner.

Basketball

• Lee University junior guard Brice Sharp from Walker Valley High School was one of four NAIA Division I men's basketball recipients of the national 2012 Champions of Character award and a $2,000 Pattison Scholarship. "There is more to this award than the basketball played on the floor," said Dr. Phil Pattison, who established the annual honor. "We also look at community involvement, their leadership on the campus and just kids that we would like our own to hang out with." Among other service activities, Sharp spent considerable time last summer with senior citizens in a Cleveland rest home, and he also has been active with Meals on Wheels. He is a member of the 100 Black Men of Bradley County, he works with autistic children in Lee's Development Inclusion Center, he volunteers weekly at the local Boys and Girls Club and he helped in the Salvation Army tornado relief effort last spring in Bradley County. Sharp also has the highest grade point average on the Flames team. "Brice is one of the finest young men I have ever coached. He is a team leader on and off the floor," coach Tommy Brown said. "Brice represents the team and our university in so many great ways." The Flames were eliminated late Thursday night from the NAIA tournament in Kansas City, Mo. Only Ryan Westbrooks with a game-high 20 points scored in double figures for Lee (20-9) in the 70-62 loss to 14th seed Georgetown (Ky.).

Baseball/SOFTBALL

• Dr. Jack Llewellyn, a nationally recognized sports psychology consultant who earned attention for helping Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz, will be the special speaker at the Tennessee Dizzy Dean banquet tonight at 7 at Abba's House in Hixson. Doors will open at 5. Llewellyn also helped NASCAR driver Tony Stewart, among other high-profile sports figures, and works now with the Washington Nationals. He is the founder and president of the Center for Winning Performance and has written and spoken often about issues in youth sports.

• ROME, Ga. -- Lee University's Kris Hall, the reigning NAIA national baseball pitcher of the week, was off form Friday but improved his record to 7-0 as the Flames began their weekend SSAC series at Shorter with a 14-8 win. Hall gave up 10 hits, seven walks and seven runs in just under six innings, but only two of the runs were earned. And Corey Davis and Edmanuel Rivera homered and combined to drive in five runs, while Jorge Saez matched Davis' three RBIs while Roberto Duran scored three runs for Lee (27-3, 13-0). Mike Miranda had three RBIs for the Hawks (20-8, 9-4).

• DAYTON, Tenn. -- Tanner Brown and Kenny Knudsen combined on a five-hitter as Bryan College beat Reinhardt 6-0 in the opener of their weekend AAC baseball series Friday. Kevin Layne was 2-for-3, Tyler Latham also had two hits and Layne, Shane Clawson and Josh Harris each had two RBIs for the Lions (20-9, 3-4).

• CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Justin Roberts and four relief pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as Dyersburg State beat Cleveland State 4-0 in TCCAA baseball. Chase Edwards had two hits for Cleveland State (14-10, 2-5). Jordan Thiele was 2-for-3 and scored twice for Dyersburg, which won two of three games last weekend at home against Chattanooga State.

• CENTRAL, S.C. -- Charlie Wooden was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game and Kelsey Barnes was 5-for-8 for the day with an RBI in each game as Lee University won 4-0 and 2-1 in SSAC softball at Southern Wesleyan. Jennifer Ringle and Savanna Bell had two hits each in game one, when Brittany Balough and Katie Deems pitched the shutout for Lee (22-5, 3-1), and Jenevieve Cena was 2-for-4 with an RBI with Deems and Jessa Watts pitching the rematch.

Lacrosse

• ATHENS, Tenn. -- Michelle Scannell scored four goals and Marina Tharina added three as Tennessee Wesleyan improved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the National Women's Lacrosse League with a 16-5 victory Friday against Missouri Baptist. Emily Clevenger and Tess Sasse had three assists apiece.
