Calhoun police are on the scene of a standoff between a man who has locked himself inside his car with his handgun.

Negotiators are trying to persuade the man, who hasn't been named yet, to surrender, and police have just called for back up from the Georgia State Patrol, said Calhoun Lt. Tony Pyle.

Police have been at the apartment complex off Mauldin Road since about 8 a.m., Pyle said. The car is located in the middle of the parking lot, he said.

Residents are advised to avoid the area, he said.
