The Sewanee baseball team won for the third time in a row in the Russ-Matt Invitational tournament with a 3-1 victory Friday against Fontbonne at Auburndale, Fla.
Freshman Michael Walker took over for starting pitcher Wilson Nealy and pitched the final six innings with only one hit allowed, and the Tigers (8-11) got three hits from Blake Bays and two apiece from Ryne Sullivan and James Snover. Alan Komorowski singled in a run and Jack Rogers had a sacrifice fly, and Scott Ward went 2-for-2 with a ninth-inning home run.
• Lee 5, Brewton-Parker 4: At Cleveland, the host Flames improved to 31-4-1 overall, 15-1 in the SSAC, after blowing a win for starting pitcher Kris Hall. Blake Barber scored two runs and drove in two and Roberto Reyes was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Lee. Hall had 10 strikeouts and gave up four hits in seven innings.
• Bryan 12, Montreat 10: At Montreat, N.C., the Lions scored seven runs in the ninth, then gave up four but outscored the Cavaliers 3-1 in the 10th for the AAC win. DeWayne Boyd and Steven Brown each was 3-for-6 with four and three RBIs and Doug Stroup had two hits and two RBIs for Bryan (24-10, 6-4). Each of the three had an RBI in the 10th.
• Piedmont 3, Covenant 2: At Demorest, Ga., Friday's scheduled game was worked into a doubleheader today, but Thursday night the 17-5 Lions won their GSAC opener on a 10th-inning unearned run driven in by Tim Nunez's third hit. David Lockwood and Scott Gillespie each was 2-for-4 for the Scots (9-9, 1-3), and James Rollins and Jonathan Carter had RBI hits. Covenant pitcher Tyler Smith was strong through seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out six.
• Chattanooga State's scheduled three-game TCCAA series at Volunteer State was delayed from Friday and today until Sunday and Monday.
