Lee now 34-4-1, No. 1 in NAIA

The Lee University baseball team moved up to No. 1 in the NAIA national rankings Tuesday and beat visiting Trevecca Nazarene 6-0 at Olympic Field in Cleveland.

Freshman James Fowlkes from Soddy-Daisy was 2-for-3 and matched Edmanuel Rivera's two RBIs for the Flames (34-4-1), who were No. 3 in the preseason poll, and Corey Davis was 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, two runs and an RBI. Fowlkes is batting .415; Davis, .364.

Senior transfer Blake Barber from Cal State Fullerton is up to .484 after going 2-for-2 with a triple.

Dustin Lawson began a parade of five Lee pitchers combining on a four-hitter.

Tennessee Wesleyan rose 11 spots to seventh in the NAIA poll. Bryan (26-11) got votes but lost 9-8 to Shorter in 10 innings Tuesday. Tyler Latham and DeWayne Boyd homered and combined for five BC hits and five RBIs, and Kevin Lane matched Boyd's three hits. Bobby Triglia was 3-for-5 with a homer and six RBIs and Blake McCullers was 4-for-6 with two RBIs for Shorter.

Lee wins showdown

Lee University won the battle of ranked SSAC softball teams Tuesday.

The Lady Flames, ranked 16th in Tuesday's NAIA poll, beat No. 10 Brenau 6-3 and 7-0 as Kelsey Barnes went 2-for-3 in each game and totaled five RBIs. Ana Coscorrosa homered and drove in four runs in game one, when Brittany Balough improved her pitching record to 16-1 and Jessa Watts got the save with a three-strikeout seventh.

Watts (11-3) pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts in game two, when Charlie Wooden was 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBIs and Jennifer Ringle completed a 4-for-7 day and scored twice for Lee (30-5, 9-1).

* Chattanooga State 5-10, Roane State 1-0: The area's other national No. 1 team improved to 37-3 overall and 6-0 with a TCCAA sweep in which Ashley Czechner rose to 20-2 and struck out nine batters and Janna Scheff added a five-inning no-hitter. Shelby Johnson, Lacye Walker and Megan Crawford each was 2-for-3 in the first game for the Lady Tigers, and Walker, Andie Johnson and Andrea Dalton each had two hits in game two, Dalton with a homer and three RBIs.

* Berry 6-7, Covenant 5-10: At Mount Berry, Ga., Beth Harris was 5-for-7 with two homers, seven RBIs and five runs in the two games for Covenant (14-7). She had five RBIs in game two, when Christine Core was 3-for-5 and Lauren Johns batted in two runs. Johns and Courtney Wagoner each was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

* Truett-McConnell 4-11, Bryan 3-3: At Cleveland, Ga., the Lady Lions fell to 8-24 but Katie Vaughn was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in game two. Courtney Combs had two first-game hit.
